A Review of the Phytochemistry, Traditional Uses and Biological Activities of the Essential Oils of Genus Teucrium
2020
AbstractThe genus Teucrium is a large and polymorphic genus of the Lamiaceae family distributed in mild climate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean basin and Central Asia. Studies of nonvolatile constituents of Teucrium species showed that they are a rich source of neo-clerodane diterpenoids, considered as chemotaxonomic markers of the genus. In addition to the nonvolatile metabolites, there has been a large interest in the essential oils of this genus. In this review, a complete survey of the chemical composition and biological properties of the essential oils isolated from Teucrium taxa is provided. In traditional medicine, since ancient times, species of this genus have been widely …
The ethnobotany, phytochemistry and biological properties of genus Ferulago – A review
2020
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance The genus Ferulago, belonging to the Apiaceae family, is found mainly in the Mediterranean area, Southwest and Middle Asia, the Caucasus and North Africa. Since ancient times, species of this genus have been largely employed in traditional medicine for their biological properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, insecticidal, and anti-malaria, cholinesterase inhibition effects, etc. Aims The scope of this paper is to present a comprehensive respect review of this interesting genus including traditional uses, chemical composition of volatile and non-volatile metabolites, and in vitro and in vivo biological properties either util…
Population dynamics and specific composition of phytoseiid mites (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae) associated with lemon trees in three differently mana…
2006
Surveys of phytoseiid mites were carried out in three lemon orchards in Sicily. The three orchards had different farm management and different environmental conditions: A) traditionally farm managed; B) organic farm managed; C) in state of neglect. The aim was to determine the specific composition of the above different types of orchards and to compare their population dynamics in order to obtain information on the influence of the different agricultural practices on the phytoseiid fauna. After two years of weekly samplings it can be assessed that no substancial differences were found in the phytoseiid specific composition among the three types of orchards. On the other hand, differences, s…
“Podalirius” o “Polidarius”? Da Arrigo da Settimello a Guido delle Colonne
2016
This paper is dedicated to the defence of the variant "Polidarius" (and not the correction in the vulgate "Podalirius") that occurs in all the manuscripts of Henry of Septimello's «Elegia» (book IV, line 209). "Polidarius", however, has many attestations in Medieval Troy literary tradition (Joseph of Exeter, Benoît de Sainte-Maure, Guido delle Colonne) and is an alternative, correct and good name for the famous mythical doctor, son of Asclepius and brother of Machaon.
Joseph Conrad-Korzeniowski, an English Writer with a Polish Soul: Joseph Conrad’s Polish Heritage
2018
The article presents a portrait of Joseph Conrad-Korzeniowski, an English writer with a Polish soul. Conrad—the last Polish Romantic—did not only manage to introduce Polish dreams and longings into English (and Western) literature, but also transformed the Polish experience into a universal one. Writing about exotic, faraway places, he disseminated myths concerning Polish national identity, chivalric tradition and the Polish Eastern Borderland atmosphere and ethos. Conrad, a very demanding writer, never presents ready-made answers, nor does he offer simple solutions to the problems of his protagonists. Moreover, everybody can understand Conrad in their own personal way, for he is perceived …
Pharmacological and chemical features ofNepetaL. genus: Its importance as a therapeutic agent
2017
Medicinal plants have always had great value for the human population due to their valuable constituents and potential bioactivities. The objective of this review is to present an updated overview of an important medicinal plant genus Nepeta L., from the family Lamiaceae, revealing its traditional utilization, biological activity, phytoconstituents, and mechanisms of action. For this purpose, a literature survey was carried out by using SciFinder, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science followed by a revision of the bibliographies of the related articles. We have described and analyzed the role of plants in drug discovery and the importance of Nepeta species. Information on the ut…
Filozofia polityczna Tomasza Hobbesa i jej wpływ na ukształtowanie się moderności
2017
Considered one of the greatest and most original English philosophers, Thomas Hobbes was the founder of modern political philosophy. His modernity manifests itself in a revolutionary position – in emphasizing novelty and in completely breaking with the past. We are still influenced by his ideas. He has introduced the model of the human being, who is driven by his desires and is involved in the ongoing activity of multiplying his wealth and of acquiring more and more power, and of the state as the organization of coercion. The knowledge of Hobbes’s political thought is essential to understand the ideological foundations of the modern world, as well as to creatively overcome them.
Saying the Saffu and Beating the Law: The Changing Role of Sacred Sites in the Oromo Politico-Juridical System
2013
This chapter presents a semiotic analysis of the role of sacred sites and other physical features and objects in key political/religious rituals of the Oromo people living in the Horn of Africa. Theoretically, it builds on Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of the concept of ‘archive’ as an intersection of the topological and the nomological of the place and the law. For Derrida, the place of the archive is not a locatable place, but a topos, the marking of a discourse. In contrast to the European tradition based primarily on archives inscribed in writing and summarised in a codified law, for the traditional Oromo society, laws were part of the oral tradition – a mixture of religion, law and …

Omic techniques in systems biology approaches to traditional Chinese medicine research: present and future.
2012
AbstractOmic techniques have become key tools in the development of systems biology. As the holistic approaches underlying the practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and new tendencies in Western medicine towards personalised medicine require in-depth knowledge of mechanisms of action and active compounds, the use of omic techniques is crucial for understanding and interpretation of TCM development, especially in view of its expansion in Western countries. In this short review, omic applications in TCM research are reviewed which has allowed some speculation regarding future perspectives for these approaches in TCM modernisation and standardisation. Guidelines for good practice for …
