Traditional knowledge and practice of the Triassic variegated clay from Silesia (Krasiejów), Poland, in human medicine.

2021

AbstractBackgroundKrasiejów clay (in German: Krascheow) became famous following the discovery of numerous fossilised bones of Upper Triassic amphibians and reptiles, which have been extracted from clay deposits since the 1980s. These organic remnants remained in Krasiejów clay due to the large amount of slime deposits and the optimal concentration of basal mineral salts. The main aims of the paper are to determine the historical evolution of the use of clay in Silesia for therapeutic purposes and to provide a summary of the historical uses of Krasiejów clay as a medical treatment, based on the knowledge of the local population.MethodsThe mode of utilisation of Triassic variegated claystone t…

Phytochemical profile and bioactivity of traditional ayurvedic decoctions and hydro-alcoholic macerations of Boerhaavia diffusa L. and Curculigo orch…

2015

Decoctions (DECs) and hydro-alcoholic extracts (HEs) prepared from roots of Boerhaavia diffusa L. (Nyctaginaceae) and Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. (Hypoxidaceae) were phytochemically characterised by HPLC-DAD and profiled for their antioxidant, antigenotoxic and cytotoxic activities. B. diffusa DEC was rich in ferulic acid and vanillin, while the HE also contained boeravinone B and eupalitin. Both C. orchioides HE and DEC displayed the main occurrence of orcinol-β-d-glucoside and curculigoside A. Antioxidant activity was assayed through spectrophotometric DPPH, ABTS and β-carotene bleaching test, and using (HP)TLC bioautographic strategies. For both crude drugs, HE was the best performing p…

Traditionally used Thai medicinal plants: in vitro anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant activities.

2009

In order to assess traditional Thai claims about the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants and to select plants for future phytochemical research, nine plant species with anti-inflammatory uses were selected from Thai textbooks and assessed for their in vitro anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antioxidant activities.Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) inhibitory effects in stably transfected HeLa cells were determined by luciferase assay, and effects on LPS-induced pro-inflammatory mediators prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1beta, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)alpha in primary monocytes were assessed by ELISA. Cytotoxic activities were examined against HeLa cells, h…

Evaluation and management of hemorrhoids: Italian society of colorectal surgery (SICCR) consensus statement

2015

Hemorrhoids are one of the most common medical and surgical diseases and the main reason for a visit to a coloproctologist. This consensus statement was drawn up by the Italian society of colorectal surgery in order to provide practice parameters for an accurate assessment of the disease and consequent appropriate treatment. The authors made a careful search in the main databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane), and all results were classified on the basis of the grade of recommendation (A-C) of the American College of Chest Physicians.

The ethnobotany, phytochemistry, and biological properties of Nigella damascena – A review

2022

This review is a systematic scientific work on medicinal and traditional use, on the chemical composition of specialized metabolites, volatile and non-volatile, on aspects related to toxicology and phytotherapy of Nigella damascena L. The genus Nigella (Ranunculaceae) is distributed throughout the Mediterranean basin, extending to northern India, and has been divided into three sections. Nigella damanscena L. is traditionally used as an ingredient in food, for example, as flavouring agents in bread and cheese, but is also known in folk medicine, used to regulate menstruation; for catarrhal affections and amenorrhea; as a diuretic and sternutatory; as an analgesic, anti-oedematous, and antip…

The hallmark of anonymity. Questions of authorship in the Hippocratic Corpus, specifically regarding the so-called 'Author C'

2020

Since Émile Littrés’ time a particular attention has been devoted to a group of Hippocratic treatises (On Generation/On the Nature of the Child + Book IV of Diseases) showing a significant range of affinities and common elements in language, style, tenor and thought. Studies by Hermann Grensemann (in the 1980s) contributed to further philological analysis of the peculiar traits of the so-called Hippocratic ‘author C’, widening the textual basis to be involved in the investigation (including gynaecological treatises like On Diseases of Women 1-2 as well as parts of Infertile Women). Recently new light has also been shed by Elizabeth Craik (editing 2009 the treatise On Glands) on the historic…

Rediscovering tradition through representation: the vaulted house of the Amalfi Coast

2022

The Amalfi Coast represents one of the most fascinating examples of Mediterranean landscape with a unique cultural and natural setting, resulting from its dramatic topography and the evolution of its community. The universal value of the coast, the evolutionary process of human adaptation to its production and exchange spaces, as well as its residential settlements, is very important to preserve. In this regard, the research is focused on the interpretation of these places, and in particular on the typical medieval houses to find the main features through the representation of ancient and new designers. The observation through the drawing allows rediscovering the essential elements that dis…

Natural polyphenols in cancer therapy.

2011

Natural polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants involved in defense against different types of stress. Extracts containing these compounds have been used for thousands of years in traditional eastern medicine. Polyphenols act on multiple targets in pathways and mechanisms related to carcinogenesis, tumor cell proliferation and death, inflammation, metastatic spread, angiogenesis, or drug and radiation resistance. Nevertheless, reported effects claimed for polyphenols are controversial, since correlations between in vitro effects and in vivo evidence are poorly established. The main discrepancy between health claims versus clinical observations is the frequent use of nonphysiological…

The fundamental Human Rights as European Law Principles: their development through the ECHR principles and the Constitutional traditions conmmon to t…

2011

The need to reinforce the fundamental human rights of EU citizens and of people living in the European Union became a key goal linked to the need to create a European area of freedom, security and justice, one European Union's internal borders were gradually abolished. Respecting fundamental rights while ensuring security and justice in the European Union became two intrinsically linked tasks of European integration in the years to come. Actually two sides of the same coin. Look, for example, the immigration policy. The latest developments have even led to the creation of a Fundamental Rights Agency.
