The Schroeder paradox or how the state of water affects the moisture transfer through edible films

The objective of this work was to better understand the water permeation through edible films when water is either in its vapour or in its liquid state related to their physico-chemical properties. Film based on iota-carrageenans or sodium alginate, containing or not fat, and encapsulating or not an aroma compound (n-hexanal) have been prepared. Films were conditioned at three different relative humidities, 0%, 43% and 84%. The incorporation of the n-hexanal in both types of biopolymer modifies the mechanical properties of film matrix and has a synergistic effect when associated to fat. A Transition Zone Complex Regulates Mammalian Ciliogenesis and Ciliary Membrane Composition

Mutations in genes encoding ciliary components cause ciliopathies, but how many of these mutations disrupt ciliary function is unclear. We investigated Tectonic1 (Tctn1), a regulator of mouse Hedgehog signaling, and found that it is essential for ciliogenesis in some, but not all, tissues. Cell types that do not require Tctn1 for ciliogenesis require it to localize select membrane-associated proteins to the cilium, including Arl13b, AC3, Smoothened and Pkd2. Tctn1 forms a complex with multiple ciliopathy proteins associated with Meckel (MKS) and Joubert (JBTS) syndromes, including Mks1, Tmem216, Tmem67, Cep290, B9d1, Tctn2, and Cc2d2a. Dimensionality of the Superconductivity in the Transition Metal Pnictide WP

We report theoretical and experimental results on the transition metal pnictide WP. The theoretical outcomes based on tight-binding calculations and density functional theory indicate that WP is a three-dimensional superconductor with an anisotropic electronic structure and nonsymmorphic symmetries. On the other hand, magnetoresistance experimental data and the analysis of superconducting fluctuations of the conductivity in external magnetic field indicate a weakly anisotropic three-dimensional superconducting phase.
Self-assembled MgxZn1−xO quantum dots (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) on different substrates using spray pyrolysis methodology

By using the spray pyrolysis methodology in its classical configuration we have grown self-assembled MgxZn1−xO quantum dots (size [similar]4–6 nm) in the overall range of compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 on c-sapphire, Si (100) and quartz substrates. Composition of the quantum dots was determined by means of transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (TEM-EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Selected area electron diffraction reveals the growth of single phase hexagonal MgxZn1−xO quantum dots with composition 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.32 by using a nominal concentration of Mg in the range 0 to 45%. Tell Shiyukh Tahtani. New light on the Bronze Age sequence

This report briefly describes the latest results of the Italian rescue excavations at Shiyukh Tahtani on the Upper Syrian Euphrates. Fieldwork continued on the eastern slope of the mound, aiming to further investigate the Bronze Age levels. A main operation, halfway down the slope, focused upon the earliest MB I layers, where a group of burials was unearthed, mostly consisting of adult interments in oval pits and child pot burials. A most striking finding was the ‘Spinstress tomb’. At the foot of the slope, the exploration of a mud-brick compound, dating back to the early third millennium BC, continued. Calorimetric study of myoglobin embedded in trehalose-water matrixes

It has been suggested that in ‘dry’ protein–trehalose–water systems, water–mediated hydrogen bond network, whose strength increases by drying, anchors the protein to its surroundings. To further characterize this effect, we performed a DSC study on low-water myoglobin–trehalose systems. The denaturation temperature resulted to increase by decreasing hydration, and linearly correlated to the glass transition temperature of both the ternary protein–water–trehalose and the binary water–trehalose systems. Further measurements are being performed to investigate eventual differences among different saccharides.
