Investigation of the glass transition and melting of polymers by nuclear magnetic resonance

Investigations of the glass transition and melting of partially crystalline polymers by nuclear magnetic resonance provide valuable information on the nature of noncrystalline regions. The broad line NMR signal was separated into a narrow component and a broad component by using a new method which does not imply the ambiguity usually present. From the intensity of the narrow component the mobile fraction was determined. This fraction was extrapolated to “infinite” temperature. By subtracting the mobile fraction from the noncrystalline fraction, the noncrystalline rigid fraction was obtained. Interfacial properties of glassy polymer melts: A Monte Carlo study

The properties of the interface between a polymer melt and a solid wall are studied over a wide range of temperatures by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that in the supercooled state near the glass transition of the melt an “interphase” forms, the structure of which is influenced by the wall. The thickness of this interphase is determined from the monomer density profile near the surface and is strongly temperature dependent. At low glass-like temperatures it is larger than the bulk radius of gyration of the chains.

Mitochondrial oxidative stress and CD95 ligand: A dual mechanism for hepatocyte apoptosis in chronic alcoholism

Apoptosis plays an important role in the progression of alcohol-induced liver disease to cirrhosis. Oxidative stress is an early event in the development of apoptosis. The major aim of this study was to study the conditions in which oxidative stress occurs in chronic alcoholism and its relationship with apoptosis of hepatocytes. We have found that oxidative stress is associated with chronic ethanol consumption in humans and in rats, in the former independently of the existence of alcohol-induced liver disease. Ethanol or acetaldehyde induces apoptosis in hepatocytes isolated from alcoholic rats, but not in those from control rats. Inhibition of aldehyde dehydrogenase, but not of cytochrome …

The Relationship between Alcohol–induced Apoptosis and Oxidative Stress in the Liver

This chapter discusses the relationship of apoptosis and oxidative stress induced by alcohol in the liver. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis and progression of alcohol-induced liver disease. Chronic alcoholism always causes oxidative stress independently of the presence of liver disease. Two key mechanisms are responsible for it: (1) the mitochondrial respiratory chain and (2) cytochrome P450 2El activity. Increased production of reactive oxygen species at complexes I and III together with NADH overproduction would be the major cause for mitochondrial oxidative stress in chronic alcoholism. NMR Matrix Technique for Detecting Self Diffusion in Polymers

A technique is discussed where monodisperse small spheres or cylindrical fibers of a polymer are embedded in a matrix of the corresponding fully deuterated polymer. On annealing the sample at a temperature above the glass transition the protonated macromolecules diffuse into the deuterated matrix and vice versa. Since the NMR spectrum depends upon the intermolecular proton proton dipolar coupling, the decrease of this coupling can be used to monitor the diffusion process. For particle diameters d ∼ 10−4 cm and annealing times t ∼ 105 s, extremely small diffusion constants D < d2/t are attainable. Self-Diffusion of Small Molecules into Rubbery Polymers: A Lattice Free-Volume Theory

In the framework of the Free Volume Theory, a new equation was derived for the evaluation of self-diffusion coefficients of small molecules in polymers above the mixture glass transition temperature. The derivation of the equation turned out to be straightforward once the equivalence between the free-volume and the unoccupied volume given by Thermodynamic Lattice Theories is assumed. A parameter evaluation scheme is proposed, which is substantially simpler compared to the conventional Vrentas-Duda approach, even without losing generality. Semicarbazides as gel forming agents for common solvents and liquid crystals

This paper describes the synthesis of 14 new gelling agents with semicarbazide groups as H-bonding motifs and alkyl- and/or azobenzene side groups. They gel solvents like decaline, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and toluene and liquid crystalline mixtures. X-Ray structure analysis shows that the semicarbazides are connected by H-bonds, each molecule to four neighbours. As a result a ribbon is formed with a core of H-bonded semicarbazide groups and alkyl chains sticking to the side. IR measurements show an unchanged H-bonding motif in large crystals and in the gel fibres, even in LC-mixture. From orientational glasses to structural glasses: What computer simulations have contributed to understand experiments

Abstract Orientational glasses, produced by random dilution of molecular crystals, exhibit a freezing transition of the quadrupole moments. Monte Carlo simulations of lattice models (generalization of the Edwards–Anderson spin glass model) have been used to elucidate this behavior. While short range models exhibit a static glass transition at zero temperature only, the infinite range Potts glass exhibits a transition where a glass order parameter appears discontinuously. At higher temperature, a dynamical transition occurs, described by mode-coupling theory (MCT). Thermal, Pressure and Light Induced Spin Transition in the Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer [Fe(pmd)2[Cu(CN)2]2]

[EN] A complete structural, calorimetric, and magnetic characterisation of the 2D coordination spin crossover polymer {Fe(pmd)(2)[Cu(CN)(2)](2)} is reported. The crystal structure has been investigated below room temperature at 180 K and 90 K, and at 30 K after irradiating the sample at low temperature with green light ( lambda = 532 nm). The volume cell contraction through the thermal spin transition is only 18 angstrom(3) which is lower than the usually observed value of around 25-30 angstrom(3) while the average Fe-N bond distances decrease by the typical value of about 0.19 angstrom.
