Exploring the Virchow-Robin spaces function: A unified theory of brain diseases.

2016

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) transport across the central nervous system (CNS) is no longer believed to be on the conventional lines. The Virchow-Robin space (VRS) that facilitates CSF transport from the basal cisterns into the brain interstitial fluid (ISF) has gained interest in a whole new array of studies. Moreover, new line of evidence suggests that VRS may be involved in different pathological mechanisms of brain diseases. Methods: Here, we review emerging studies proving the feasible role of VRS in sleep, Alzheimer's disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Results: In this study, we have outlined the possible role of VRS in different path…

A PCA Interpretation of the Glasgow Coma Scale in the Trauma Brain Injury PECARN Dataset

2018

CT scan is strongly recommended for a patient affected by head trauma, but he/she must absorb a certain amount of radiations. For this reason, the physician tries to avoid such a practice for pediatric patients. The symptoms analysis, visual/tactile inspection, and reactions to appropriate stimuli from the physician could induce him/her to put the patient in a period of observation instead of performing an immediate CT scan. As a consequence, the correct evaluation of those symptoms is a crucial task. For this reason, the Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale (PGCS) plays a fundamental role, because it is a numeric scale regarding the patient’s mental status. It is computed as the sum of the score f…

Tinnitus with Headaches

2011

1. Patients with tinnitus frequently have headaches, but the relation between these two disorders is not always casual. 2. Headaches and tinnitus could be symptoms of the same disease. 3. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a syndrome in which headaches and tinnitus often occur together. 4. Headaches and tinnitus often occur together with other focal symptoms in symptomatic intracranial hypertension. 5. Intracranial vascular abnormalities such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) can occur together with any kind of headache with paroxysmal tinnitus. 6. Tinnitus may be one of the signs of a basilar migraine. 7. Headaches are a very frequent symptom after head trauma, and tinnitus is als…

Long‐term molecular differences between resilient and susceptible mice after a single traumatic exposure

2022

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous disorder induced by trauma, resulting in severe long-term impairments of an individual's mental health. PTSD does not develop in every individual and, thus, some individuals are more resilient. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we aimed to elucidate these processes. We used a single-trauma PTSD model in mice to induce long-term maladaptive behaviours and profiled the mice 4 weeks after trauma into resilient or susceptible individuals. The classification of phenotype was based on individual responses in different behavioural experiments. We analysed microbiome, circulating endocannabinoids, and lo…

Salvage treatment with ganciclovir in a splenectomized, polytransfused patient affected by systemic inflammatory response syndrome

2014

A 23-year-old man was admitted to hospital with a 12-day history of daily fever. A clinical history revealed that 10 months previously, the patient had been splenectomized and polytransfused for a severe blunt trauma. On admission, laboratory data revealed significant leukocytosis (33,230/ul). The patient's general clinical conditions rapidly worsened into a severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome in four days. After 10 days of broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment, the temperature curve was unmodified and severe leukocytosis persisted (44,300 ul) with absolute lymphocytosis. Laboratory tests ruled out hematological diseases, pneumonia, abscesses and endocarditis. In the light of IgM …

A novel arousal-based individual screening reveals susceptibility and resilience to PTSD-like phenotypes in mice

2021

Translational animal models for studying post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are valuable for elucidating the poorly understood neurobiology of this neuropsychiatric disorder. These models should encompass crucial features, including persistence of PTSD-like phenotypes triggered after exposure to a single traumatic event, trauma susceptibility/resilience and predictive validity. Here we propose a novel arousal-based individual screening (AIS) model that recapitulates all these features. The AIS model was designed by coupling the traumatization (24 h restraint) of C57BL/6 J mice with a novel individual screening. This screening consists of z-normalization of post-trauma changes in startle …

MR IMAGING AND HORMONAL FINDINGS IN PATIENTS WITH IDIOPATHIC GROWTH HORMONU DEFICIENCY

1993

Until the introduction of MR imaging in neuroradiological diagnostic, diagnosis of the ecotopic posterior pituitary lobe, first described by the pathologist Priesel in 1920, was rare. Recently it has increasingly been diagnosed by MR in patients whose anamnesis showed birth trauma. We performed MR of the hypothalamic-pituitary region in 17 patients with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency. 8 patients had additional deficiencies of the anterior pituitary lobe whereas the function of the posterior lobe of the hypophysis was normal in all patients. Indications of birth trauma were present in only 2 patients. The cause of anterior lobe insufficiency was determined by MR in 8 patients with panh…

Solitudini perturbanti. Catherine Malabou e l'estetica del fantastico

2020

Internal carotid artery dissection in a patient with hemophilia A: a case report and literature review

2023

Spontaneous cervical artery dissection (sCeAD) is the most common cause of ischemic stroke at a young age, but its pathogenetic mechanism and risk factors are not fully elucidated. It is reasonable to think that bleeding propensity, vascular risk factors such as hypertension and head or neck trauma, and constitutional weakness of the arterial wall together play a role in the pathogenesis of sCeAD. Hemophilia A is known to be an X-linked condition that leads to spontaneous bleeding in various tissues and organs. To date, a few cases of acute arterial dissection in patients with hemophilia have been reported, but the relationship between these two diseases has not been studied so far. In addi…
