Enduring Changes in Decision Making in Patients with Full Remission from Anorexia Nervosa

2016

Background: Deficits in neuropsychological functioning have consistently been identified in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known on how decision making in AN patients evolves in response to treatment or whether impairments are reversible. Method: AN patients (n = 42) completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) upon admission to a 3-month day-hospital treatment programme and at a 1-year follow-up. Patient IGT performance was compared to age-matched controls (n = 46). Results: AN patients displayed poorer performance on the IGT at admission compared to controls (p <.001). Patients with full remission (n = 31; 73.9%) at the 1-year follow-up improved IGT performance (p = 0.0…

Changes of coagulation parameters during high altitude expedition

2010

Data on changes of haemostatic parameters at altitudes above 5000 m are very limited. So far it is unknown, whether altered coagulation could contribute to the development of acute mountain sickness.Thirty four healthy mountaineers were randomised to two acclimatisation protocols and undertook an expedition on Muztagh Ata (7549 m) in China. Tests were performed at five altitudes up to 6865 m. Haemostatic parameters, such as PT, aPTT, D-Dimer, APC-Resistance (APCR), von Willebrand Factor activity (RCo), ADAMTS-13C-Natriuretic Peptide (CNP) were assessed together with Lake Louise AMS score.D-Dimer significantly increased with increasing altitude (median 0.62 to 0.81 mcg/L, p0.0001). During as…

Formation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichloroanisole during treatment and distribution of drinking water

1995

Biomethylation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol to the potent off-flavour compound 2,4,6-trichloroanisole has previously been found to cause taste and odour problems in drinking water. In the present study, both compounds were detected in seemingly unpolluted surface waters. However, the highest concentrations of 2,4,6-trichloroanisole in tap water were caused by the formation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol during chlorine disinfection of drinking water and subsequent methylation of this compound in the distribution system. Analysis of samples from several sites in the investigated distribution systems showed that there was a substantial spatial and temporal variation of the concentration of both 2,4,6-t…

Emerging extraction

2015

Traditional extraction methods include usually high temperature treatment (more than 100°C) with the subsequent risk of thermal denaturation or transformation of the target molecules. Moreover, these techniques are very time-consuming and require relatively large quantities of solvents. On the other hand, the use of environmentally friendly technologies has led researchers and the food industry to develop new alternative processes that can extract valuable compounds from different sources and food wastes of different origin. This chapter describes the potential use of emerging technologies such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), laser ablation, pulsed electric fields (PEF), high volta…

Efficacy and foliar absorption of flupyrsulfuron-methyl and prosulfocarb applied alone or in mixture on Lolium multiflorum and wheat

2001
