Growth, yield and fruit quality of 'Tropic Snow' peach on size-controlling rootstocks under dry Mediterranean climates
2013
Abstract A six-year trial was carried out to evaluate the vegetative and productive performance of low-chill, early-ripening ‘Tropic Snow’ peach grown on five peach × almond rootstocks, different for their vigor. The study was conducted in south-western Sicily using 45 V-trained peach trees planted in 2005 and grafted on GF677, the most common rootstock in Sicily, and four low-vigor rootstocks selected at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, University of Pisa, namely IS5/8 (Polluce), IS5/19 (Castore), IS5/23, and IS5/29. Trunk circumference, winter and summer pruning weight, total number and weight of fruits per tree, and major fruit quality traits were recorded…
A comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity and environmental adaptability in worldwide Merino and Merino-derived sheep breeds
2023
Abstract Background To enhance and extend the knowledge about the global historical and phylogenetic relationships between Merino and Merino-derived breeds, 19 populations were genotyped with the OvineSNP50 BeadChip specifically for this study, while an additional 23 populations from the publicly available genotypes were retrieved. Three complementary statistical tests, Rsb (extended haplotype homozygosity between-populations), XP-EHH (cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity), and runs of homozygosity (ROH) islands were applied to identify genomic variants with potential impact on the adaptability of Merino genetic type in two contrasting climate zones. Results The results indicate…
New 3-zone hybrid graft : First-in-man experience in acute type I dissection
2019
Abstract Objective Acute type I aortic dissection (AAD) represents a surgical emergency with time-dependent evolving complications. Frozen elephant trunk (FET) enables false lumen exclusion downstream but is still debated in AAD due to its greater dimension of surgery. To combine the benefits of fast proximal repair with the FET benefits, a 3-zone hybrid graft was developed consisting of an ascending polyester portion, an arch noncovered stent, and a descending stent graft. Mid-term results of this new technique are presented. Methods A total of 6 patients (age mean 69 years) with type I AAD in critical status (Penn classification B n = 5, BC n = 1) were operated between July 2016 and April…
Transport service for session initiation protocol in SIP-T scenarios
2005
The traditional telephone service has undergone deep changes in the years concerning the techniques of commutation and signaling. Today, public switched telecom networks (PSTNs) and private integrated services networks (PINSs) are strongly directed to adopt IP-based backbone. If it is possible to transfer the voice on packet switching network, in such reliable way, using voice over IP (VoIP) techniques, there is not still a valid alternative to the signaling systems, reliable and unfailing, like signaling system n.7 (SST). Session initiation protocol (SIP) seems to be the best candidate. SIP is an application layer signaling protocol and the problem remains still opened for what it concerns…
Preliminary evaluation of sixPrunusrootstocks for peach in Italy
2018
In Italy, the evaluation of rootstocks is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and carried out in a network of trials along the Country. This study evaluated growth and yield performance of ‘Big Top’ nectarine and ‘Rome Star’ peach grafted on six rootstocks of different origin and vigor, namely GF677 (the most widespread in Italy), Garnem, Adesoto, RootPac®20, RootPac®40, and RootPac®90, in three different locations, Castelvetrano (Sicily), Forlì and Cesena (Emilia-Romagna). Yield, number of fruits, trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA), average fruit weight, flesh firmness, soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) were determined at the third leaf (2015). In all sites, tree…
Autonomic Nerve Blocks
1988
Selective block of the sympathetic trunk was first reported by Sellheim and, shortly thereafter, by Lawen, Kappis, and Finsterer (1905–1910). In 1924, reports were published by Brumm and Mandl and by Swertlow. After 1930, the technique and the indications were established by White in the United States and Leriche and Fontaine in Europe.
Risk of predation and foraging sites of individuals in mixed-species tit flocks
1993
Abstract Abstract. Foraging sites of individual willow tits, Parus montanus, and crested tits, P. cristatus, on spruce were studied in a winter when the risk of predation from pygmy owls, Glaucidium passerinum, was high and in a winter when it was low. Mixed-species flocks consisted of two crested tits (a pair) and three to six willow tits. The risk of predation from owls is likely to be highest on the most exterior tree parts. Female crested tits foraged further out on the branches than other individuals when predation risk was low, but foraged in the safer sites close to the tree trunk when the risk was high. Male crested tits retained both their relative distance to the trunk and their r…
Contribution to the research of microbial and RedOx bio-indicators for the early characterisation of wood diseases in grapevines
2022
Grapevine trunk diseases, linked to pathogenic fungi whose mechanism of action is still poorly characterised, are responsible for grapevine decline in vineyards throughout the world, causing significant losses in productivity and yield in the wine sector. Given the current lack of effective solutions to stop the establishment of the disease and the development of symptoms, which are irreversible but often late in relation to the pathogenic infection, early diagnosis of these diseases is essential. Considering the grapevine holobiont, i.e. the grapevine and the microbiota interacting with, we hypothesise that early bio-indicators of diseases would make it possible to identify a disturbance i…
Chimney and Periscope Grafts Observed Over 2 Years After Their Use to Revascularize 169 Renovisceral Branches in 77 Patients With Complex Aortic Aneu…
2013
Purpose: To evaluate the performance of periscope and/or chimney grafts (CPGs) in the endovascular treatment of pararenal or thoracoabdominal aneurysms using off-the-shelf devices. Methods: Between February 2002 and August 2012, 77 consecutive patients (62 men; mean age 7369 years) suffering from pararenal aortic (n¼55), thoracoabdominal (n¼16), or arch to visceral artery aneurysms (n¼6) were treated with aortic stent-graft implantation requiring chimney and/or periscope grafts to maintain side branch perfusion. CPGs were planned in advance and were not used as bailout. A standardized follow-up protocol including computed tomographic angiography, laboratory testing, and clinical examination…
Fungal pathogens associated with grapevine trunk diseases in young vineyards in Sicily
2020
After the first report of grapevine decline caused by Botryosphaeriaceae in Sicily in 2007, epidemiological studies carried out in mature vineyards until 2011 confirmed the widespread occurrence of “Botryosphaeria dieback” and the “Esca complex” disease. Dieback symptoms were also recently observed in two young vineyards in Partanna and Castellammare del Golfo in western Sicily (Trapani province). Declining vines were inspected for grapevine trunk disease (GTD) symptoms, and were uprooted and submitted for analyses. Fungal isolates were collected and identified using culturing and molecular analyses. One isolate per identified species was inoculated to three grapevine shoots to evaluate pat…
