Effects of Cognitive and Mental Health Factors on the Outcomes Following Carpal Tunnel Release: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

2022

OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of the cognitive and mental health factors on the outcomes following carpal tunnel release (CTR). DATA SOURCES Embase, Pubmed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases from inception to August 14, 2021. STUDY SELECTION Randomized controlled trials and observational studies of patients with CTR were included. The included studies aimed to determine the effect of the cognitive (catastrophic thinking, kinesiophobia and self-efficacy) or mental health factors (symptoms of anxiety and depression) on the outcomes at least three months post-CTR. DATA EXTRACTION Two independent reviewers performed data e…

Carpal tunnel syndrome and pain

2022

Abstract Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a compressive peripheral neuropathy characterized by pain, tingling sensation, and paresthesia in the region of the median nerve. The patient’s medical history, the presence of risk factors, and the characteristics of the symptoms are key aspects for establishing a suitable differential diagnosis. Conservative or surgical treatment of CTS may be indicated depending on both the severity and temporality of the condition. The conservative treatment of mild and moderate CTS includes, among the most common treatments in physiotherapy and occupational therapy, the use of orthoses, physical agents, manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, education, ergonomic…

Interventional treatment for neuropathic pain due to combined cervical radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome: a case report

2017

Key Clinical Message The coexistence of median and cervical nerve root damage might hide a complex pathophysiology. Here, we describe and discuss the case of a patient suffering from numbness and painful tingling of the hand, whose symptoms were effectively treated with pulsed radiofrequency and epidural administration of bupivacaine and morphine.

Acute Effect of Topical Menthol on Chronic Pain in Slaughterhouse Workers with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Triple-Blind, Randomized Placebo-Controlled Tr…

2014

Topical menthol gels are classified “topical analgesics” and are claimed to relieve minor aches and pains of the musculoskeletal system. In this study we investigate the acute effect of topical menthol on carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). We screened 645 slaughterhouse workers and recruited 10 participants with CTS and chronic pain of the arm/hand who were randomly distributed into two groups to receive topical menthol (Biofreeze) or placebo (gel with a menthol scent) during the working day and 48 hours later the other treatment (crossover design). Participants rated arm/hand pain intensity during the last hour of work (scale 0–10) immediately before 1, 2, and 3 hours after application. Further…

Sulcus ulnaris Syndrom nach Traumen im Ellenbogenbereich

2008

For a large scaled test 52 patients with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve and 62 patients with elbow injuries were examined by questionnaire, physical examination and electroneurography. In conformity with existing literature 24 patients out of 52 suffering from cubital tunnel syndrome had an elbow trauma previously. To our great surprise in seven patients out of 46 with elbow injuries a cubital tunnel syndrome could be found for the first time. The cubital tunnel syndrome appears to be a frequent complication of elbow injuries. Besides the well known fractures of the medial epicondyle and pericondylar fractures leading to cubital tunnel syndrome, in our study fractures of the head…

The Impact of the Introduction of Innovative REDS Scale for the Evaluation of Central Tunnelled Catheter (CTC) Exit Site on Infection Prevention in L…

2021

Central tunneled catheter (CTC)-related infections are a leading cause of a catheter loss, thus being the source of significant morbidity and mortality. The study aims at evaluating the impact of the implementation of the innovative redness, edema, discharge and tenderness, symptoms (REDS) scale (devised by the authors) for the description of the tunnel condition on the frequency of infection in long-term catheter users. The same cohort of the 40 patients was observed for 4 years altogether: 2 years before and 2 years after REDS application. The results, as well as follow-up evaluation of participants, were compared. The 2-year cumulative incidence of the CTC exit site infection (ESI) dropp…

Circumferential graft for elbow instability

2019

For those patients with instability of the medial and lateral sided of the elbow, there is a place for a circumferential graft. This has the main advantage of simplifying the bone tunnel creation and graft fixation, compared to having both medial- and lateral-sided reconstructions.

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscope Use in Electrocatalysis Testing

2010

Published version of an article from the journal: Materials (1996-1944). Also available from publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/ma3063675 The relationship between the electrocatalytic properties of an electrode and its ability to transfer electrons between the electrode and a metallic tip in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is investigated. The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was used as a test reaction with four different metallic glasses, Ni78Si8B14, Ni70Mo20Si5B5, Ni58Co20Si10B12, and Ni25Co50Si15B10, as electrodes. The electrocatalytic properties of the electrodes were determined. The electrode surfaces were then investigated with an STM. A clear relationship between the…

Visualization of Moiré Magnons in Monolayer Ferromagnet

2023

| openaire: EC/H2020/788185/EU//E-DESIGN Two-dimensional magnetic materials provide an ideal platform to explore collective many-body excitations associated with spin fluctuations. In particular, it should be feasible to explore, manipulate, and ultimately design magnonic excitations in two-dimensional van der Waals magnets in a controllable way. Here we demonstrate the emergence of moiré magnon excitations, stemming from the interplay of spin-excitations in monolayer CrBr3 and the moiré pattern arising from the lattice mismatch with the underlying substrate. The existence of moiré magnons is further confirmed via inelastic quasiparticle interference, showing the appearance of a dispersion …

Chemical heterogeneity of amyloid in the carpal tunnel syndrome

1987

140 biopsies from 108 patients afflicted with the carpal tunnel syndrome were studied, 27 of whom showed deposition of amyloid, in 6 of them to such an extent that the amyloid was considered significant in the pathogenesis of the carpal tunnel syndrome. Morphologically, vessels and ligaments were affected and especially the peritendinous structures. As it was always part of generalized amyloidosis, the amyloid in the carpal tunnel consisted immunohistologically of amyloid A in three cases (including one case with simultaneous amyloid deposition of the AA- and the AB-type), of amyloid A kappa in one case, of amyloid of prealbumin origin in seventeen cases and of AB-amyloid in eight cases. We…
