Polymorphonuclear leukocyte integrin pattern, at baseline and after activation, in type 2 diabetic subjects with macrovascular complications.

2003

In vascular atherosclerotic disease and in diabetes mellitus few studies have evaluated the polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) adhesion molecule pattern. In this study we examined the PMN integrin expression at baseline and after activation in controls and type 2 diabetic subjects with macrovascular complications (MVC). We enrolled 21 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and macrovascular complications, localized in peripheral, coronary and cerebral sites. The patients had peripheral occlusive arterial disease, chronic cerebrovascular disease or coronary heart disease. We evaluated the expression of some PMN integrins (CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, CD18), using flow cytofluorimetry, at baseline and…

High prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of 145 studies

2017

Erectile dysfunction may be common among men with diabetes, but its prevalence is still debated. We aimed to assess the relative prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes searching major databases from inception to November 2016 for studies reporting erectile dysfunction in men with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. We conducted a meta-analysis of the prevalence [and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs)] of erectile dysfunction in diabetes compared with healthy controls, calculating the relative odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. A random effect model was applied. From 3747 initial hits, 145 studies were included representing 88 577 men (age: 55.8 ± 7.9 years). The prevalence of erectile …

Mediterranean diet and heart rate: the PREDIMED randomised trial

2014

A higher heart rate (HR) has been associated with increased total and cardiovascular mortality [1] and [2]. Clinical trials support the beneficial effect of decreasing HR in patients with heart failure [3] and ischaemic heart disease [4]. A recent cross-sectional study showed that closer adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) was related to lower HR [5]. We evaluated the association between adherence to the MeDiet (measured with a score from 0 to 14 obtained by a validated screener [6]) and HR using both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal analysis of the PREDIMED trial [7] and [8].

Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Olmesartan/Amlodipine vs. Perindopril/Amlodipine in Peripheral and Central Blood Pressure Parameters After Misse…

2016

Background Central aortic blood pressure (CBP) and CBP-derived parameters are independent predictors of cardiovascular risk. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors plus calcium channel blockers are the recommended first-line treatments in hypertensive diabetic patients; however, the effect in reducing CBP when a dose is skipped has not been established yet. The aim was to determine whether the fixed-dose combination of olmesartan/amlodipine (OLM/AML) provides equal efficacy and safety as the perindopril/AML (PER/AML) combination in reducing CBP, augmentation index (AIx), and pulse wave velocity (PWV) when a drug dose is missed. Methods In this no…

Medullary thyroid carcinoma in a 2-month-old male with multiple endocrine neoplasia 2B and symptoms of pseudo-Hirschsprung disease: a case report

2007

A 5-week-old male patient was seen for symptoms suggestive of Hirschsprung disease (abdominal distension, failure to thrive, and explosive defecation). Rectum biopsies revealed an intestinal ganglioneuromatosis, which is usually associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndrome type 2B. The ensuing molecular genetic analysis revealed a M918T mutation of the RET protooncogene, which is associated with early-onset medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). Therefore, total thyroidectomy and central lymphadenectomy were performed at the age of 9 weeks. Histology showed a medullary microcarcinoma. This report of MTC occurrence within the first weeks of life underlines the importance of early …

Mass Concentration of Plasma Phospholipid Transfer Protein in Normolipidemic, Type IIa Hyperlipidemic, Type IIb Hyperlipidemic, and Non–Insulin-Depen…

1999

Abstract —Mean plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) concentrations were measured for the first time by using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PLTP mass levels and phospholipid transfer activity values, which were significantly correlated among normolipidemic plasma samples ( r =0.787, P <0.0001), did not differ between normolipidemic subjects (3.95±1.04 mg/L and 575±81 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=30), type IIa hyperlipidemic patients (4.06±0.84 mg/L and 571±43 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=36), and type IIb hyperlipidemic patients (3.90±0.79 mg/L and 575±48 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=33). No significant correlations with plasma lipid p…

Cannabinoid receptor 1 and acute resistance exercise – In vivo and in vitro studies in human skeletal muscle

2015

Abstract Aim This study aimed to determine whether Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) is involved in mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and skeletal muscle protein synthesis. Methods This study used human vastus lateralis skeletal muscle biopsies obtained before and after a resistance exercise (RE) bout in young men (n = 18). The signaling mechanisms were studied in vitro in human myotubes. Protein expression was determined by Western blot and confocal microscopy, and gene expression by quantitative PCR. Protein synthesis was measured in vitro using puromycin-based SuNSET technique. Results In human skeletal muscle, an anabolic stimulus in the form of RE down-regulated CB1 expression.…

Activation of angiotensin II type 1 receptors and contractile activity in human sigmoid colon in vitro.

2015

We propose and validate a non-invasive method that enables accurate detection of the discharge times of a relatively large number of motor units during excitatory and inhibitory reflex stimulations. HDsEMG and intramuscular EMG (iEMG) were recorded from the tibialis anterior muscle during ankle dorsiflexions performed at 5%, 10%, and 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) force, in 9 healthy subjects. The tibial nerve (inhibitory reflex) and the peroneal nerve (excitatory reflex) were stimulated with constant current stimuli. In total, 416 motor units were identified from the automatic decomposition of the HDsEMG. The iEMG was decomposed using a state-of-the-art decomposition tool a…

Frailty Is Associated with Oxidative Stress in Older Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

2021

Aging has increased the prevalence of frailty, and type 2 diabetes (T2D) has also increased in prevalence. Diabetes and oxidative stress (OS) have been shown to be related to frailty. However, the exact mechanism by which it occurs is not fully known. Our aim was to analyze body composition in community-dwelling older diabetic people treated in our center and to evaluate the possible relation between OS, frailty, and body composition. We included 100 adults older than 65 years with T2D. We found that 15% were frail and 57% were prefrail. The patients included in the nonrobust group showed increased levels of OS. Our study shows that the presence of T2D in the geriatric population is associa…
