Functional and genomic diversity of methylotrophic Rhodocyclaceae: description of Methyloversatilis discipulorum sp. nov.

Three strains of methylotrophic Rhodocyclaceae (FAM1T, RZ18-153 and RZ94) isolated from Lake Washington sediment samples were characterized. Based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences the strains should be assigned to the genus Methyloversatilis. Similarly to other members of the family, the strains show broad metabolic capabilities and are able to utilize a number of organic acids, alcohols and aromatic compounds in addition to methanol and methylamine. Vibrio aestivus sp. nov. and Vibrio quintilis sp. nov., related to Marisflavi and Gazogenes clades, respectively

Abstract Two new Vibrio species, Vibrio aestivus and Vibrio quintilis , are described after a polyphasic characterization of strains M22 T , M61 and M62 T , isolated from seawater collected off a beach on the East coast of Spain (Valencia). All three strains are Gram negative, mesophilic, slightly halophilic, fermentative rods. V. aestivus (M22 T  = CECT 7558 T  = CAIM 1861 T  = KCTC 23860 T and M61 = CECT 7559 = CAIM 1862 = KCTC 23861) is oxidase positive, reduces nitrates to nitrites, is negative for Voges Proskauer, arginine dihydrolase and indole and non hydrolytic on most substrates tested. Effect of low temperature on starvation-survival of the eel pathogen Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2

At present, no reports exist on the isolation of the eel pathogen Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 from water samples. Nevertheless, it has recently been demonstrated that this biotype can use water as a route of infection. In the present study, the survival of this pathogen in artificial seawater (ASW) microcosms at different temperatures (25 and 5 degrees C) was investigated during a 50-day period, with biotype 1 as a control, V. vulnificus biotype 2 was able to survive in the culturable state in ASW at 25 degrees C in the free-living form, at least for 50 days, entering into the nonculturable state when exposed to low temperature. Evaluation of microbial diversity during the manufacture of Fior di Latte di Agerola, a traditional raw milk pasta-filata cheese of the Naples area

Microbial diversity of the raw milk for the production of Fior di Latte di Agerola and its changes during cheesemaking were studied. Viable counts showed that at the end of curd ripening, loads of lactic acid bacteria, both mesophilic and thermophilic rods and cocci, higher than those commonly evidenced in similar cheeses produced by using natural or commercial starters, were detected. Summary In the present report, a total of thirty-one isolates of Gibberella fujikuroi (Sawada) Wollenw. species complex of Fusarium (section Liseola) morphologically classified as F. moniliforme according to the taxonomy of Nelson, Toussoun and Marasas (1983) were analyzed for their ability to produce fumonisin B1 and fumonisin B2 by an optimized liquid chromatographic method. They were isolated from three hosts (Zea mays, Musa sapientum and Pinus pinea). Characterization of Fusarium spp. isolates by PCR-RFLP analysis of the intergenic spacer region of the rRNA gene (rDNA)
