A time series study on the effects of heat on mortality and evaluation of heterogeneity into European and Eastern-Southern Mediterranean cities: resu…

2013

Background: The Mediterranean region is particularly vulnerable to the effect of summer temperature. Within the CIRCE project this time-series study aims to quantify for the first time the effect of summer temperature in Eastern-Southern Mediterranean cities and compared it with European cities around the Mediterranean basin, evaluating city characteristics that explain between-city heterogeneity. Methods: The city-specific effect of maximum apparent temperature (Tappmax) was assessed by Generalized Estimation Equations, assuming a linear threshold model. Then, city-specific estimates were included in a random effect meta-regression analysis to investigate the effect modification by several…

Modelling of Social Policy and Initiatives under COVID-19: Rural NEET Youth Case Study

2021

NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth rates in Europe are generally higher in rural regions than in urban areas and the share in rural regions is constantly increasing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, young people became even more vulnerable as they experienced social exclusion and mental health problems. The objective of this paper is to analyse NEET youth-related statistics in Europe and distinguish positive initiatives for young people in rural areas of the Baltic countries to encourage positive emotions and willingness to learn. Statistical analysis and case study methods were employed. Data on youth unemployment, NEET youth by age and gender, and poverty and social exclu…

Residential location and youth unemployment: The economic geography of school-to-work transitions

2003

In response to increased international policy attention to youth unemployment this study investigates post-secondary school transitions of school leavers. Multinomial logit models are estimated for male and female German youth. The models control for individual, parent, and household characteristics, for those of the youth’s region of residence and local labor markets. The findings suggest that immigrant youth has particularly low participation rates in continued education, and that youth unemployment is centered in high unemployment states and metropolitan areas. More generous academic benefit policies seem to be correlated with increased academic enrollment, and men’s transitions to the m…

EFFECTS OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC AND JOBS CRISIS ON THE HEALTH STATUS OF THE ITALIAN AND SICILIAN POPULATIONS: FROM THE OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE TO NOT OC…

2014

The economic crisis that started in 2008 in many countries of the world, has resulted in the reduction of many jobs in all the regions of Italy, most especially in the Southern part of the Country. The employment difficulties experienced by both the unemployed and employed workers, experiencing increasingly precarious conditions, will inevitably result in a worsening of psycho-physical conditions of the population; especially as an increase in stress-related diseases. Aims: The aim of this study is to point-out the possible effects of the economic crisis on the health status of the population resident in Italy and Sicily, evaluating data from years preceding and following the year 2008. EVOLUTION OF LABOR MARKET AND OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE IN A CHANGING WORLD: ANALYSIS OF THE ITALIAN DATA 2000-2019 AND POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE ECON…

2022

Introduction: The first two decades of the third millennium have been characterized by deep economic changes in various countries around the world with an inevitable impact on the job market. The aim of this study is to analyze the data of the last twenty years relating to employment in Italy, compared with European ones, to understand how the 2008 economic crisis affected employment in the following years and how the recent crisis, related to the COVID 19- pandemic emergency, may contribute further. Methods: The study analysed data related to the labor market in Italy and in the European Countries. The 2000-2019 period was analytically evaluated by comparing employment and unemployment rat…

Persistence in Italian rate of Unemployment in presence of breaks and regional asymmetries

2006

This work aims to test the persistence of Italian unemployment rate during last fifty years. To this scope we find evidences of a unit root, also when we allow for the presence of structural shifts so that the level of unemployment has a path dependant behaviour. Secondly, we test a possible explanation of the persistence through the presence of cointegration relationships with some institutional labour market variables, such as the union membership. Thirdly, there are asymmetric macroregional behaviours so that the great bulk of persistence is given by Center – Southern unemployment. It implies that changes in unemployment level have longer duration in the poorest part of the country.

Labor Productivity and Okun’s law: An empirical application to Italian regional panel data

2012

Okun’s law, named for its proposer, Arthur Okun, was first applied during the 1960s in the USA to describe the relationship between economic growth and unemployment fluctuations. Several attempts were later made to test the empirical applicability of the relationship to different countries and historical periods. Heterogeneous results were generally found in estimating Okun’s coefficient, depending on the sample and context analysed. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the relevance of Okun’s law to Italian regions. We perform a panel analysis to estimate the influence of asymmetry and local market differences on Okun’s relationship. Moreover, observing particularly low values of part…

Child personality characteristics and selection into long-term unemployment in Finnish and Swedish longitudinal samples

2003

The main aim of the present study was to test a model of selection into long-term unemployment obtained for a sample of 36-year-old Finns (Kokko, Pulkkinen, & Puustinen, 2000) to see whether it similarly explained long-term unemployment among 26- to 27-year-old Finns and Swedes. The participants were drawn from two ongoing longitudinal studies: the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (conducted in Finland) and the Individual Development and Adaptation study (conducted in Sweden). At both ages, that is 36 and 26–27, low education was related to long-term unemployment, and explained by personality characteristics in middle childhood, such as low self-contro…

Jauniešu ar zemu izglītību iekļaušanās darba tirgū Latvijā

2013

Anotācija Promocijas darba nosaukums: Jauniešu ar zemu izglītību iekļaušanās darba tirgū Latvijā Promocijas darba autors: Mg.soc. Mareks Niklass Promocijas darba vadītājs: prof. Dr.soc.
