Effect of Multizone Refractive Multifocal Contact Lenses on Standard Automated Perimetry
2012
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the creation of 2 foci (distance and near) provided by multizone refractive multifocal contact lenses (CLs) for presbyopia correction affects the measurements on Humphreys 24-2 Swedish interactive threshold algorithm (SITA) standard automated perimetry (SAP). METHODS In this crossover study, 30 subjects were fitted in random order with either a multifocal CL or a monofocal CL. After 1 month, a Humphrey 24-2 SITA standard strategy was performed. The visual field global indices (the mean deviation [MD] and pattern standard deviation [PSD]), reliability indices, test duration, and number of depressed points deviating at P<5%, P<2%, P<1%, an…
Optical power distribution of refractive and aspheric multifocal contact lenses: Effect of pupil size
2015
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the power profile within the optic zone of different designs of multifocal contact lenses (CLs) and to analyze how the effect of pupil size could impact on their optical performance. Methods The optical power distribution within the optic zones of multifocal CLs was measured by the Nimo TR1504 (LAMBDA-X, Belgium). The multifocal CLs under study were the Acuvue Bifocal, the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia, the PureVision Multifocal and the PureVision 2 for Presbyopia. Each design was considered in all their available addition powers. All lenses had a nominal power of −3.0D. At the same time, three lenses of each model were considered and five consecutive readings of …
Reliability of manual segmentation of cornea, contact lens and tear film using a high-resolution OCT
2015
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intra/inter-session and intra/inter-observer variability of manual segmentation of thickness of the pre-lens tear film, contact lens (CL), post-lens tear film, epithelium, bowman’s layer, stroma and the whole cornea and CLs with a flat and a steep fit, using a commercial high-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomographer (OCT). Two different observers obtained three repeated measures in two separate sessions. A high correlation was found between the values obtained by the two different observers, except for the thinner layers, epithelium, and Bowman’s layer. Inter-observer analysis showed a high consistency in the measurements obtained by b…
Opportunities and threats to contact lens practice: A global survey perspective
2021
Aim: To understand the views of contact lens (CL) practitioners across the globe regarding what they perceive as opportunities and threats in CL practice. Methods: A self-administered anonymised questionnaire, constructed in English and translated in six more languages, was distributed through reputed international professional bodies and academic institutions worldwide. The questionnaire included items on demographic characteristics, type of practice, and questions designed to explore practitioners’ perspective on the future of their CL practice over the next five years. Results: A total of 2408 valid responses were analysed. Multifocal CLs for presbyopia, CLs for myopia control, use of da…
First Results on the Scalar WIMP-Pion Coupling, Using the XENON1T Experiment
2018
We present first results on the scalar coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to pions from 1 t yr of exposure with the XENON1T experiment. This interaction is generated when the WIMP couples to a virtual pion exchanged between the nucleons in a nucleus. In contrast to most nonrelativistic operators, these pion-exchange currents can be coherently enhanced by the total number of nucleons and therefore may dominate in scenarios where spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions are suppressed. Moreover, for natural values of the couplings, they dominate over the spin-dependent channel due to their coherence in the nucleus. Using the signal model of this new WIMP-pion channel, …
Search for events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least two tau leptons in 7 TeV proton–proton collision data with the ATLAS det…
2012
A search for events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least two tau leptons has been performed using 2 fb[superscript −1] of proton–proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and a 95% CL upper limit on the visible cross section for new phenomena is set, where the visible cross section is defined by the product of cross section, branching fraction, detector acceptance and event selection efficiency. A 95% CL lower limit of 32 TeV is set on the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) scale Λ independent of tan β. These limits provide the most s…
Limits on tau lepton-flavor violating decays into three charged leptons
2010
A search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor violating decay of the tau lepton into three charged leptons has been performed using an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1) collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. In all six decay modes considered, the numbers of events found in data are compatible with the background expectations. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set in the range (1.8-3.3) x 10(-8) at 90% confidence level.
Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Events with Multiple Bottom Quarks at the Tevatron
2012
The combination of searches performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with b quarks is reported. The data, corresponding to 2.6fb -1 of integrated luminosity at CDF and 5.2fb -1 at D0, have been collected in final states containing three or more b jets. Upper limits are set on the cross section multiplied by the branching ratio varying between 44 pb and 0.7 pb in the Higgs boson mass range 90 to 300 GeV, assuming production of a narrow scalar boson. Significant enhancements to the production of Higgs bosons can be found in theories beyond the standard model, for example, in supersymmetry. The results are int…

The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano
2019
International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.
