Vegetation series as a marker of interactions between rural settlements and landscape: new insights from the archaeological record in Western Sicily
2020
[EN] Plant communities are complex and dynamic elements of the landscape, intertwined with both natural factors and human activities. Vegetation series reflect the environmental characteristics of the landscape, but also the anthropic impact, one of the exogenous forces that most profoundly affects the landscape formation process. This paper aims to investigate the interactions between long-term human settlement catchment areas and vegetation series. The case study area of the Sicani Mountains (Central-Western Sicily) proved to be an ideal place to perform GIS-based spatial analysis in order to compare a data set of rural archaeological sites and land units created through the mapping of ve…

TERRITORI TRASVERSALI. Centri minori rurali e industriali in Sicilia e Spagna
2021
The orographic and natural conditions, together with small towns’ cultural, heritage and industrial conditions, have become the landscape of relationships between spaces where silence, slowing down and acceleration define the urban and human imaginary of these transversal territories. Although very different from each other in terms of topographical location, traditions and cultural and linguistic specificities, it is possible to find constants of criticality and potential. This essay illustrates new read¬ings and settles meanings to initiate a collaborative work in Sicily and Spain along the Trasversale Sicula and in the mining landscape of the Minas de La Reunión in the province of Sevill…

Territori sensibili.
Smart city: casi studio
2015

This has been the consequences of a multitude of circumstances, European financial crisis, migrants/refugees crisis, a new administration of the city and an increased awareness and responsibility among the citizens. This positive moment has been launched and, progressively, rid- den by many young professionals that decided to challenge the present situation by investing their…
The Smart Land Paradigm in the Sicani Territorial Archipelago
2017
With the aim to identify the specific identities of the Sicani territory, to interpret them in a perspective of innovative development and to define strategies capable of intercepting programming in progress, it has been deepened the “territorial archipelago” theoretical framework , recognizing it into the Sicani territory and trying to use it as the base of a possible development of a Smart Land, as a “non-gravitational” paradigm able to recognize and to direct the new relations of the rur-urban local systems.
