Unexpectedly normal phase behavior of single homopolymer chains

2006

Employing Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the topology of the phase diagram of a single flexible homopolymer chain changes in dependence on the range of an attractive square well interaction between the monomers. For a range of attraction larger than a critical value, the equilibrium phase diagram of the single polymer chain and the corresponding polymer solution phase diagram exhibit vapor (swollen coil, dilute solution), liquid (collapsed globule, dense solution), and solid phases. Otherwise, the liquid-vapor transition vanishes from the equilibrium phase diagram for both the single chain and the polymer solution. This change in topology of the phase diagram resembles the behavior k…

Hydrodynamic mechanisms of spinodal decomposition in confined colloid-polymer mixtures: A multiparticle collision dynamics study

2013

A multiscale model for a colloid-polymer mixture is developed. The colloids are described as point particles interacting with each other and with the polymers with strongly repulsive potentials, while polymers interact with each other with a softer potential. The fluid in the suspension is taken into account by the multiparticle collision dynamics method (MPC). Considering a slit geometry where the suspension is confined between parallel repulsive walls, different possibilities for the hydrodynamic boundary conditions (b.c.) at the walls (slip versus stick) are treated. Quenching experiments are considered, where the system volume is suddenly reduced (keeping the density of the solvent flui…

Water-Blown Polyisocyanurate Foams From Vegetable Oil Polyols

2008

Polyols with the hydroxyl value OHV from 290 to 318 mg KOH/g are synthesized from rapeseed, sunflower seed, flaxseed, or coconut oils by the way of their: (1) transesterification with triethanolamine or (2) amidization with diethanolamine. The influence of water as the blowing agent on the storage stability of the polyol premix system is assessed from values of the polyol premix system pH, acid value, and variations in such parameters as cream and gel time. Water-blown polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams (150 · II × 300; II—isocyanate index) characterized by good mechanical characteristics, dimensional stability at 70°C and at relative humidity RH = 95% as well as by a very low water absorbance, …

ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of New 3-(3-Phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl) or 3-[(3-Phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl)amino] Substituted 4(3H)-Quinazolinone Derivatives wit…

2010

A novel series of 3-(3-phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl) or 3-[(3-phenyl-isoxazol-5-yl)amino] substituted 4(3H)-quinazolinone derivatives was synthesized. The compounds were tested for their antineoplastic activity in vitro against Raji (human Burkitt limphoma). K-562 (human chronic myelogeneous leukemia) and U937 (human histiocytic limphoma) cell lines. The most active quinazolinones showed IC50 values in the range 16-30 microM.

Does communal context bring the worst in narcissists?

2014

The present experiment (N = 95) investigated the relations of narcissism with social value orientation under facade conditions of testing communal or agentic traits (or none – in a control condition). The results indicated that narcissism predicted less willingness to share resources with others and more competitive orientation in a facade communal condition compared to the remaining two conditions: control and agentic. The results confirm narcissistic disregard for communal domain and are consistent with the extended agency model of narcissism and the “success as a drawback” effect.

Conrad Under Polish Eyes - or: is Conrad still "one of us"?

2015

This article discusses the attitude of Polish Conrad scholars towards Conrad and his works from the very beginning of his literary career to the present day, discussing the way they have perceived Conrad’s national identity and his cultural belonging. Although I aim to present a review of Polish criticism over the years, I pay particular attention to modern criticism, i.e. that of the period since the end of the Second World War, which includes the years of de facto communist rule (1945-1989). I try to determine whether Conrad is still “one of us”, whether he can be perceived as a moralist in the twenty-fi rst century and whether there is a need for such a moralist in present-day Poland.

Clarifying Skills and Competencies in Organisational Decision Making – Perceptions of Finnish Communication Professionals

2017

This paper seeks to better understand the skills and competencies that Public Relations (PR) professionals use in contributing to organisational decision-making processes. The data were collected by interviewing Finnish professionals using thematic semi-structured interviews. Overall, the results highlight a deep understanding of organisation management and decision-making processes. The most important competencies were business understanding and target group oriented thinking. The findings indicate that important skills are related to writing and social media. ‘Regarding personal attributes, interaction and tolerance to criticism were acknowledged as most crucial. The conclusions suggest t…

Shift-Invariant Canonical Polyadic Decomposition of Complex-Valued Multi-Subject fMRI Data with a Phase Sparsity Constraint

2020

Canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of multi-subject complex-valued fMRI data can be used to provide spatially and temporally shared components among groups with both magnitude and phase information. However, the CPD model is not well formulated due to the large subject variability in the spatial and temporal modalities, as well as the high noise level in complex-valued fMRI data. Considering that the shift-invariant CPD can model temporal variability across subjects, we propose to further impose a phase sparsity constraint on the shared spatial maps to denoise the complex-valued components and to model the inter-subject spatial variability as well. More precisely, subject-specific time …

Strictly convergent algorithm for an elliptic equation with nonlocal and nonlinear boundary conditions

2012

The paper describes a formally strictly convergent algorithm for solving a class of elliptic problems with nonlinear and nonlocal boundary conditions, which arise in modeling of the steady-state conductive-radiative heat transfer processes. The proposed algorithm has two levels of iterations, where inner iterations by means of the damped Newton method solve an appropriate elliptic problem with nonlinear, but local boundary conditions, and outer iterations deal with nonlocal terms in boundary conditions.
