A note on some fundamental results in complete gauge spaces and application
2015
We discuss the extension of some fundamental results in nonlinear analysis to the setting of gauge spaces. In particular, we establish Ekeland type and Caristi type results under suitable hypotheses for mappings and cyclic mappings. Our theorems generalize and complement some analogous results in the literature, also in the sense of ordered sets and oriented graphs. We apply our results to establishing the existence of solution to a second order nonlinear initial value problem.
Le clausole generali
2021
The essay aims the fundamental issue of general clauses as particular type of rule. The analyze then focuses on the valutative nature of the general clauses e the process of their concretization, called "valutative integration". Finally, the study deals with the distinction between general clauses, principles and values.
A new approach for the measurement of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) and H2S in air from anthropogenic and natural sources: Examples from Mt. Amiata…
2017
Real-time measurements of GEM and H2S discharged from natural and anthropogenic sources are a valuable tool to investigate the dispersion dynamics of these contaminants in air. In this study, a new approach to measure GEM and H2S concentrations in air, carried out by coupling a portable Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometer with high frequency modulation of light polarization (Lumex RA-915M) and a pulsed fluorescence gas analyzer (Thermo Scientific Model 450i), was applied to two distinct areas: (i) in the surroundings of Piancastagnaio (Siena, Central Italy), located in the eastern flanks of Mt. Amiata (a 200,000Â years old volcano), where three geothermal plants are operating and whose ex…
Passive vs. active degassing modes at an open-vent volcano (Stromboli, Italy)
2012
Abstract We report here on a UV-camera based field experiment performed on Stromboli volcano during 7 days in 2010 and 2011, aimed at obtaining the very first simultaneous assessment of all the different forms (passive and active) of SO 2 release from an open-vent volcano. Using the unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of the UV camera, we obtained a 0.8 Hz record of the total SO 2 flux from Stromboli over a timeframe of ∼14 h, which ranged between 0.4 and 1.9 kg s −1 around a mean value of 0.7 kg s −1 and we concurrently derived SO 2 masses for more than 130 Strombolian explosions and 50 gas puffs. From this, we show erupted SO 2 masses have a variability of up to one order of mag…
Response of macrophyte communities and status metrics to natural gradients and land use in boreal lakes
2012
Abstract We studied the relations of aquatic macrophyte communities, ecological quality metrics and water quality to lake characteristics and to land use defined at multiple spatial scales (three lake marginal zones (LMZs) of contrasting width and the whole topographic catchment) in 110 boreal lakes in Finland using ordination and generalised additive modelling. Variation in macrophyte community composition of our lakes was related to water quality, land use, latitude and lake morphology. Relationships of macrophyte status metrics – the proportion of type-specific species (TT50), Percent Model Affinity (PMA) and Trophic Index (TI) – to land use were scale dependent. The proportion of agricu…
A boundary condition for arbitrary shaped inlets in lattice-Boltzmann simulations
2009
We introduce a mass-flux-based inlet boundary condition for the lattice-Boltzmann method. The proposed boundary condition requires minimal amount of boundary data, it produces a steady-state velocity field which is accurate close to the inlet even for arbitrary inlet geometries, and yet it is simple to implement. We demonstrate its capability for both simple and complex inlet geometries by numerical experiments. For simple inlet geometries, we show that the boundary condition provides very accurate inlet velocities when Re less than or similar to 1. Even with moderate Reynolds number, the inlet velocities are accurate for practical purposes. Furthermore, the potential of our boundary condit…
CD3 immunohistochemistry is helpful in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.
2018
Objective. To evaluate whether CD3 staining performed routinely on temporal artery biopsy specimens might improve the sensitivity of temporal artery biopsy in patients with biopsy-negative GCA. Methods. Two hundred and seventy biopsies were considered for this study, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and with an anti-CD3 antibody. Results. The addition of CD3 staining modified the sensibility and the specificity of the histologic examination in 89.47 and 95.00%, respectively, with a positive and negative predictive values of 97.00 and 79.78%. Conclusion. The addition of CD3 immunostaining to the classic histologic evaluation is accompanied by a significant increase in the sensibility with…
The objective o…

PREDICTING BLADDER CANCER AT THE EMERGENCY UNIT: THE IMPACT OF HEMOGLOBIN VALUE
2014
Aim of the study Haematuria represents the most common symptom at presentation in patients with bladder Cancer (BCa). However, no study has tested the predictors of BCa in patients presenting with haematuria. This prospective study was aimed to assess the factors associated with the presence of BCa in patients presenting at our emergency unit due to gross-hematuria. Materials and methods All patients presenting at the emergency unit of our institution for their first episode of gross haematuria between January and December 2012 were evaluated. All clinical patient characteristics, including the ongoing antiplatelets and/or oral anticoagulative treatment, were recorded. Demographical, hemato…
