Predictive Value for Increased Factor XIa and Plasma Kallikrein Activity in Acute Venous Thromboembolism
2021
Abstract Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with increased coagulation activity, which in part can be attributed to the contact pathway of coagulation. Evidence from pre-clinical and epidemiological studies suggests that deficiency in factors of contact activation (e.g. coagulation factors (F) XI and FXII) protects against VTE. However, limited information exists regarding the activation of the contact system in the setting of acute VTE. In the current study, patients with confirmed VTE events (n=321) from the VTEval study and controls (n=300) from the population-based PREVENT-it pilot study were included. Plasma samples were collected from patients after confirmed VTE events or con…
Heavy and Light Chain Monitoring in High Risk Smoldering Multiple Myeloma Patients Included in the GEM-CESAR Trial: Comparison with Conventional and …
2019
Introduction: The GEM-CESAR trial is a potentially curative strategy for high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (HRsMM) patients (pts) in which the primary endpoint is the achievement of bone marrow minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity. However, other methods of disease evaluation in serum such as heavy+light chain (HLC) assessment, with a potential complementary value to the IMWG response criteria, have also been tested. Aim: To evaluate the performance of HLC assay in HRsMM pts at diagnosis and after consolidation, comparing the results with standard serological methods and Next Generation Flow (NGF) for the assessment of bone marrow MRD. Patients and Methods: Ninety HRsMM pts include…
Normalwerterstellung von Blutströmungsgeschwindigkeiten an der Arteria mesenterica superior bei Früh- und Reifgeborenen mit der Duplexsonographie
1994
In a prospective study blood flow velocity measurements were performed in 110 "healthy" newborn with duplex Doppler sonography in the superior mesenteric artery to obtain standard values. In 49 of these neonates 15, 30, and 45 minutes following feeding examinations were performed. Peak systolic flow velocity, end systolic flow velocity, time average flow velocity and time average maximum flow velocity were determined, the resistance and Pourcelot index as well as the volume blood flow were calculated. The children's gestational age was 27-42 weeks, the postnatal age was 2-68 days and the body weight was 920-4190 g. All measured blood flow velocities showed a synchronous relation to feeding …

Primary Persistent Atrial Fibrillation: A Distinct Arrhythmia Subentity of an Ablation Population
2015
INTRODUCTION Persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF) can occur either as a sustained arrhythmia that has progressed from initially paroxysmal AF or as primary persAF without a history of any spontaneously terminated episode. There is a paucity of data differentiating between the 2 different persAF entities. Thus, we prospectively evaluated baseline characteristics, electrophysiological features, and ablation outcome in these 2 patient cohorts. METHODS AND RESULTS A total number of 154 consecutive persAF patients (63 ± 10 years, f = 42, longstanding persAF = 60) were characterized in terms of having primary persAF (P-persAF group) or persAF that secondarily progressed from paroxysmal AF (S-p…
Controlled Ovarian Stimulation Induces a Functional Genomic Delay of the Endometrium with Potential Clinical Implications
2008
Context: Controlled ovarian stimulation induces morphological, biochemical, and functional genomic modifications of the human endometrium during the window of implantation. Objective: Our objective was to compare the gene expression profile of the human endometrium in natural vs. controlled ovarian stimulation cycles throughout the early-mid secretory transition using microarray technology. Method: Microarray data from 49 endometrial biopsies obtained from LH+1 to LH+9 (n = 25) in natural cycles and from human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) +1 to hCG+9 in controlled ovarian stimulation cycles (n = 24) were analyzed using different methods, such as clustering, profiling of biological processes…
Brain Oedema and Intracranial Pressure in Superior Sagittal Sinus Balloon Occlusion. An Experimental Study in Pigs
1990
About 2/3 of all patients with thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) develop signs of increased ICP and/or brain oedema (BE). The time of onset and the spectrum of symptoms in SSS thrombosis vary extremely. This variability might be caused by differences in pathomechanism like BE and rise of ICP, parameters studied in the present contribution.
Detection of liver metastases in cancer patients with geographic fatty infiltration of the liver: the added value of contrast-enhanced sonography
2017
Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the detection of liver metastases in cancer patients with geographic liver fatty deposition on greyscale ultrasonography (US). Methods Thirty-seven consecutive cancer patients (24 women and 13 men; age, 33 to 80 years; mean, 58.1 years) with geographic liver fatty deposition, but without any detectable focal liver lesion on greyscale US, underwent sulphur hexafluoride-enhanced US. Two readers reported by consensus the presence, size, and location of any detected lesion. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a confirmatory study. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negat…
Heart rate variability as predictor of mortality in sepsis: A systematic review.
2018
Background Autonomic dysregulation is one of the recognized pathophysiological mechanisms in sepsis, generating the hypothesis that heart rate variability (HRV) can be used to predict mortality in sepsis. Methods This was a systematic review of studies evaluating HRV as a predictor of death in patients with sepsis. The search was performed by independent researchers in PubMed, LILACS and Cochrane, including papers in English, Portuguese or Spanish, indexed until August 20th, 2017 with at least 10 patients. Study quality was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. To analyze the results, we divided the articles between those who measured HRV for short-term recordings ( 1 hour), and those who did…
