Plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide and hemodynamic function in cardiac disease.

Plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide were measured in eight patients with cardiac disease but normal resting right atrial pressure, during cardiac catheterization. No patient had clinical evidence of overt heart failure. An increase in peptide concentrations was observed between the aorta or the peripheral vein and the pulmonary artery. A linear relation was found between peripheral vein and pulmonary artery peptide concentration. Mean pulmonary artery and capillary wedge pressure also correlated with the peptide levels. The effects of vasopressin and deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP, desmopressin) were studied in artery rings (0.8-1 mm in external diameter) obtained from portions of human omentum during the course of abdominal operations (27 patients). 2. The aim of this study was to analyze whether arginine vasopressin (AVP) may be considered a modulator of intestinal motility. In this view, we evaluated, in vitro, the effects induced by exogenous administration of AVP on the contractility of mouse distal colon, the subtype(s) of receptor(s) activated and the action mechanism. Isometric recordings were performed on longitudinal and circular muscle strips of mouse distal colon. AVP (0.001 nM-100 nM) caused concentration-dependent contractile effects only on the longitudinal muscle, antagonized by the V1 receptor antagonist, V-1880. Abstract SSR149415 was the first non-peptide vasopressin-(V1b) receptor antagonist reported. It has been used to probe the role of V1b receptors in animal models of depression, aggression, and stress-anxiety, and was progressed to clinical trials for the treatment of depression. Due to the interest in V1b receptors as a therapeutic target and the growing use of SSR149415 in preclinical research, we developed a method to label SSR145419 with carbon-11 and have studied its pharmacokinetics in non-human primates using positron emission tomography.

Most variation in behavior has a genetic basis, but the processes determining the level of diversity at behavioral loci are largely unknown for natural populations. Expression of arginine vasopressin receptor 1a (Avpr1a) and oxytocin receptor (Oxtr) in specific regions of the brain regulates diverse social and reproductive behaviors in mammals, including humans.
