Optic disc positioning and blood vessels extraction on eye fundus

2009

This paper presents two methods aimed to the optic disc positioning on the retinal images. The first is based on a template of the entire image, while the second is based on the retinal vascularisation. For this second task, also a vessel extraction method is provided. Both the algorithm have been tested on test images of the Drive Database.

A Programmable Networked Processing Node for 3D Brain Vessels Reconstruction

2011

Real-time 3D imaging represents a developing trend in medical imaging. However, most of the 3D medical imaging algorithms are computationally intensive. In this paper, a programmable networked node for 3D brain vessels reconstruction is proposed. Starting from 2D PC-MRA (Phase-Contrast Magnetic Resonance Angiography) sequences, the node is able to generate the 3D brain vasculature using the MIP (Maximum Intensity Projection) algorithm. The node has been prototyped on the Celoxica RC203E board, equipped with a Virtex II FPGA, to get the advantages of an hardware implementation, reaching a better throughput with respect to analogous software implementations. Its generality and programmable ca…

Arterial Hypertension and the Hidden Disease of the Eye: Diagnostic Tools and Therapeutic Strategies.

2022

Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor that is responsible for a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A critical aspect of cardiovascular risk estimation in hypertensive patients depends on the assessment of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD), namely the generalized structural and functional changes in major organs induced by persistently elevated blood pressure values. The vasculature of the eye shares several common structural, functional, and embryological features with that of the heart, brain, and kidney. Since retinal microcirculation offers the unique advantage of being directly accessible to non-invasive and relatively simple investigation tools, the…

Inguinal hernia: The destiny of the inferior epigastric vessels and the pathogenesis of the disease

2020

While many scientific reports deal with inguinal hernia, including treatment methods and prosthetic devices proposed to provide a cure, few studies have sought to deepen our understanding of the etiology of this disease. The genesis of inguinal protrusion seems to be a neglected subject, even though addressing hernia genesis may be helpful for improving techniques and materials for surgical treatment. To clarify the source of inguinal protrusions, macroscopic and histological alterations of the inferior epigastric vessels in the herniated groin have been studied. These vascular structures exhibit significant features that could help to illuminate hernia genesis. In patients with double ipsil…

Porcine Model for Internal Mammary Vessels Harvesting

2018

Recipient vessels selection is crucial for successful microsurgical breast reconstruction. The internal mammary vessels (IMVs) have gained great popularity, and they are often selected as first choice recipient vessels. The IMVs can be exposed for microvascular anastomosis through a rib-removing (trans-costal) or a rib-sparing (intercostal) approach.1–3 Because the vessels are located between the rib cage and the parietal pleura, adequate training is needed to avoid and eventually manage bleedings and pleural perforation. This training is better performed in a nonhuman model. Our aim was to investigate the pig as a surgical model for IMVs harvesting to be used in training.

Increased gingival blood vessel density in SLE patients

2012

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a serious multisystem disease with a variety of cutaneous and oral manifestations. It is an autoimmune disorder whereby patients develop autoantibodies to many of their cells, cell components, and tissue. The microvascular changes in SLE play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the gingival microcirculation in SLE patients. METHOD AND MATERIALs: Fifteen SLE patients and 15 healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Gingival microcirculation was investigated using videocapillaroscopy, a noninvasive technique that permits the in vivo evaluation of microvascular patterns. RESULTS: Significant difference…

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: Limitations for resectability, current surgical concepts and future perspectives.

2020

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is the second most common hepatic malignancy and its incidence has been shown to increase significantly during the past decades. Complete surgical resection is currently acknowledged as the only curative treatment option able to provide adequate long-term outcomes. We herein review technical, functional and oncologic limitations for resectability, discuss current surgical aspects as well as highlight the fields in which future research and practice should focus on in order to ameliorate long-term outcomes in patients with iCCA.

Assessment of particle suspension conditions in stirred vessels by means of pressure gauge technique

2002

In this work the quantitative assessment of the mass of suspended solid particles in stirred vessels is performed using the Pressure Gauge Technique. This is based on the measurements of the pressure increase on the tank bottom due to the presence of suspended solid particles at any agitation speed. The method has the advantages of not utilising visual observations and of easy and inexpensive application to both laboratory and industrial equipment. Very few data are available in literature and the experimental results collected using the present PGT technique and the correlations here proposed are of considerable academic and industrial interest.
