On the analysis of the cat's pattern recognition system
1983
The objective of the paper is to determine in abstract terms the algorithms used by the cat detecting simple patterns and to quantify the contributions of the visual areas 17, 18, 19 for this task. The data incorporated in the algorithm are collected from behavioral experiments where the animals had to distinguish between two patterns. The patterns were superimposed with gaussian noise and the detection probability was measured. The resulting model describes pattern recognition in two steps: first extraction of features and second classification. The test of the validity of the model system was to predict the outcome of similar experiments but with different patterns. With the help of the m…
Il Cabinet d'amateur di Georges Perec
2011
In 1979 one year after the publication of La vie mode d’emploi, George Perec wrote Cabinet d’amateur. Histoire d’un tableau, in which he tells the story of a painting belonging to the genre of the cabinet d’amateur, also known as kunst- und wunderkammer. It is a collection of different paintings, usually belonging to a rich man or a notable, portrayed (once again) in a single picture celebrating the magnificence of this more or less real collection. As for the pictorial genre, so the short novel is the celebration of the images collected by George Perec in his previous masterpiece, La vie mode d’emploi. This is why I assume this work to be referable to the genre of structural homology more …
Organized Sport Participation and Physical Activity Levels among Adolescents with Functional Limitations
2017
Sufficient and regular physical activity is considered a protective factor, reducing the onset of secondary disability conditions in adolescents with chronic diseases and functional limitations. The aim of this study was to explore whether participation in organized sport may be associated to higher levels of physical activity in adolescents with functional limitations, based on a national representative sample. Data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study collected in Finland from two data collection rounds (2002 and 2010) were conducted and pooled from adolescents aged between 13 and 15 years old with functional limitations (n = 1041). Differences in self-reported p…
A Case of Use in the Management of Administrative Processes, Control of Procedures and Services to Citizens In E-Government
2020
One of the objectives of the fourth industrial revolution is the use of data to make decisions, in this sense the decisions of the government could be better if they are based on useful data sources, with quality and focused on services to citizens. This article presents a case of use in the government of Colombia in which an information system was created for the management of complaints and claims by means of control panels, visualization of statistical information and high personalization in the processes for more than 1200 offices and 8000 employees.
Fusion of visual tools in virtual spaces
1996
Virtual space environment may be improved by combining it with graphical and visual tools. This paper analyses an integrated system able to merge fusion techniques, icons tools and a virtual space environment. A virtual space is characterised by a set of dynamic visual icons and by a heterogeneous virtual reality environment. Their integration is supported by virtual icon grammar (VIG) working on dynamic icons and virtual world. VIG allows to test the actions made by dynamic icons on the activated Virtual World metaphors at a time “t”, and a range of different transactions that place between user and VW(visual query, view and browse of under-world,...), moreover, user can define, modify and…
The time course of processing handwritten words: An ERP investigation
2021
Available online 25 June 2021. Behavioral studies have shown that the legibility of handwritten script hinders visual word recognition. Furthermore, when compared with printed words, lexical effects (e.g., word-frequency effect) are magnified for less intelligible (difficult) handwriting (Barnhart and Goldinger, 2010; Perea et al., 2016). This boost has been interpreted in terms of greater influence of top-down mechanisms during visual word recognition. In the present experiment, we registered the participants’ ERPs to uncover top-down processing effects on early perceptual encoding. Participants’ behavioral and EEG responses were recorded to high- and low-frequency words that varied in scr…
Sensibilidad al contraste tras cirugía de cristalino transparente con lente intraocular multifocal asférica difractiva
2013
PURPOSE: To evaluate distance and near contrast sensitivity (CS) under photopic and mesopic conditions before and after refractive lens exchange (RLE) and implantation of the aspheric AcrySof®ReSTOR® (SN6AD3 model) intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS:Seventy-four eyes of 37 patients after RLE underwent bilateral implantation with the aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR IOL. The patient sample was divided into myopic and hyperopic groups. Monocular uncorrected visual acuity at distance and near (UCVA and UCNVA, respectively) and monocular best corrected visual acuity at distance and near (BCVA and BCNVA, respectively) were measured before and 6 months postoperatively. Monocular CS function was measured at t…
'In altum mittis radices humilitatis'. A Study of Marian Images in touch with Nature
2019
"Paolo Boccone’s curious observations and the Commitment to Visual Communication of Natural History", speech at International Conference "Art and Sci…
2015
In his "Recherches et observations naturelles" (Amsterdam 1674) the botanist Paolo Boccone (1633- 1704) presents himself as an advocate of a new visual method. He was supported by Jan Swammerdam, with whom he shared his scientific observations. Boccone claims to be the first to apply microscopic dissection to figured stones, in order to distinguish accidental shapes from natural ones. Boccone, as many of the members of the scientific community with whom he corresponded, had a strong commitment to painstaking observation and visual communication, that he was able to handle on many levels. The allegorical frontispiece of "Recherches" is aimed to present a range of moral and psychological atti…
Learning from the Past : The Women Writers Project and Thirty Years of Humanities Text Encoding
2017
In recent years, intensified attention in the humanities has been paid to data: to data modeling, data visualization, “big data”. The Women Writers Project has dedicated significant effort over the past thirty years to creating what Christoph Schöch calls “smart clean data”: a moderate-sized collection of early modern women’s writing, carefully transcribed and corrected, with detailed digital text encoding that has evolved in response to research and changing standards for text representation. But that data—whether considered as a publication through Women Writers Online, or as a proof of the viability of text encoding approaches like those expressed in the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Gu…
