Acute Hemodynamic Responses to Combined Exercise and Sauna.

AbstractThis study investigated acute hemodynamic, plasma volume and immunological responses to four loading protocols: sauna only, and sauna after endurance, strength or combined endurance and strength exercise. Twenty-seven healthy, slightly prehypertensive men (age 32.7±6.9 years) were measured at PRE, MID (after exercise), POST, POST30min and POST24h. The measurements consisted systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature and concentrations of high-sensitive C-reactive protein, white blood cells and plasma volume measurements. Are abdominal obesity and body mass index independent predictors of hemorheological parameters?

There is an association between obesity and rheological blood behavior [2, 4–7]. In this sense we have read with interest the recently published article by Brun et al. [1] in this journal. The authors evaluate, in a population of 430 subjects, the relationship between abdominal obesity and body mass index (BMI) with blood viscosity, and conclude that both anthropometric parameters are associated with increased blood viscosity but by different mechanisms, where the waist to hip ratio is a better predictor for blood viscosity than BMI. The reliability of two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic estimation of left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is commonly recognized, but no satisfactory data are available about the accuracy of low or very low EF values determined by 2D echocardiography (ECHO-EF). Glucose insulin potassium infusion improves systolic function in patients with chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy

Objective: We assessed the effects of glucose–insulin–potassium (GIK) by echocardiography in stable patients with ischemic dysfunction. Methods: Twelve male patients with stable coronary disease (SCD) and ejection fraction (EF) <45% were studied for systolic function. GIK (glucose 30%, 300 insulin units and KCl 6 g/l) was infused at 1 ml/kg per h over 20 min. Hemodynamic and echocardiographic measurements were recorded at rest (T0), at the end (20 min) of GIK infusion (T + 20), 20 and 40 min after the end of the infusion (T + 40 and T + 60). Persistent unilateral tibialis anterior muscle hypertrophy with complex repetitive discharges and myalgia

Unilateral enlargement of the tibialis anterior muscle associated with complex repetitive discharges occurred over several months in two patients and was preceded by pain and numbness in the lower leg. Neuroradiologic investigations excluded a compressive radiculopathy, but pharmacologic and neurophysiologic studies suggested a neurogenic basis for the muscle hypertrophy. Botulinum toxin A injection into the hypertrophied muscles led to a decreased muscle volume and cessation of muscle pain.

AbstractOxygen uptake (V̇O2), heart rate (HR), energy cost (EC) and oxygen pulse are lower during downhill compared to level or uphill locomotion. However, a change in oxygen pulse and EC during prolonged grade exercise is not well documented. This study investigated changes in cardiorespiratory responses and EC during 45-min grade exercises.
