Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 activity is increased in patients with definite familial hypercholesterolemia compared with other forms of hy…

2018

Background and Aim: Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2(Lp-PLA2) plays a key role in atherosclerosis development. It is considered a marker of increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and plaque vulnerability. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and a higher prevalence of early CVD. Our aim was to evaluate the differences in Lp-PLA2activity in a population of hypercholesterolemic patients with and without definite FH. Methods and Results: Hypercholesterolemic patients were consecutively recruited. Definite FH was defined according to Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria ≥8. All pat…

Vulnerabilità sociali e diseguaglianze digitali post pandemia: l’inclusione trascurata dei migranti

2022

The pandemic has been an event capable of radicalising trends that were already underway: growth in inequalities, crisis in central and local administrations, crisis in public regulation and essential public services (health, education, training and work), increase in areas of social vulnerability. Recent studies and research clearly confirm the link between social vulnerability, inequalities, exclusion and Covid-19 in the experience of non-Italian citizens, as well as the close connection between exposure to a high risk of contagion and conditions of poverty and social margin- ality, defined as stratification of precariousness linked to the migrant experience. Nevertheless, this specific s…

Manifold instances of proximity violence and proximity vulnerability of the migrant women

2020

Over the past few decades and up until 2017, Sicily has hosted increasing numbers of African fugitives into the European Union. Within this markedly multicultural context, the authors carried out a two-part qualitative research project, the first part consisting in participative observation of a number of sub-Saharan women hosted by some of the island’s refugee reception centres, victims of abuse, followed by a set of semi-structured interviews administered to them. The aim of the paper was to analyse some of the role positions found in gender dynamics among migrants, throwing light on possible processes by which mechanisms of submission to and normalisation of gender violence seem to have …

Family Issues. Difficulties in Migrant Family Life Exacerbated by the Pandemic.

2022

Most of the time, when we talk about the family, we think of the indigenous family, but what happens when the focus shifts to foreign families? Furthermore, in a time of pandemic, what repercussions and impacts have there been on foreign families? And have the interventions proposed by the government to deal with COVID-19 and to support families, taken foreign families into account? The issue is quite complex because it has to deal, on the one hand, with definitional problems related to the difficulties in identifying types of foreign families (Ambrosini, 2020b) present in Italy, and, on the other hand, with an analysis of the impact that the virus has had on family structures. Migrant fami…

An Approach for the Validation of a Coastal Erosion Vulnerability Index: An Application in Sicily

2022

In recent decades, coastal erosion phenomena have increased due to climate change. The increased frequency and intensity of extreme events and the poor sediment supply by anthropized river basins (dams, river weirs, culverts, etc.) have a crucial role in coastal erosion. Therefore, an integrated analysis of coastal erosion is crucial to produce detailed and accurate coastal erosion vulnerability information to support mitigation strategies. This research aimed to assess the erosion vulnerability of the Sicilian coast, also including a validation procedure of the obtained scenario. The coastal vulnerability was computed by means of the CeVI (Coastal Erosion Vulnerability Index) approach, whi…

Schiavitù, servitù e sfruttamento lavorativo

2022

An assessment of energy vulnerability in Small Island Developing States

2020

Abstract Small Island Developing States (SIDS) suffer from several structural characteristics that jeopardize their ability to achieve a sustainable energy future. Their reliance on imported fossil fuels exacerbates their exposure to external threats on international energy markets. Their energy systems are also exposed to internal disturbances that disrupt the proper production, transmission and distribution of energy. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which island energy systems are vulnerable to shocks and internal dysfunctions over which they have no control. For this purpose, we build a composite index of energy vulnerability using the Multi-Layer Benefit-of-the-Dou…

Socio-Demographic Vulnerability: The Condition of Italian Young People

2009

For a kind of inertia effect, today the Italian welfare state protects the older too much and, on the contrary, it does not counter sufficiently the new risks associated with other phases of life. Not much seems to be implemented in favour of Italian young people who, as a matter of fact, seem to suffer a lot from the present changes: young people remain longer in the parental home and postpone setting up their own independent life to a most advanced age. In order to understand the situation of vulnerability increasingly widespread among young people, it seemed more and more necessary an in-depth analysis of the reasons and the subjective status of the discomfort that affects young people b…

Narrating ambivalence of maternal responsibility

2007

Early motherhood and caring for the infant involve a moral ambiguity that is related to the questions of responsibility and vulnerability. By means of the ethics of care, motherhood can be understood as belonging to the moral domain, as relational, and as linked with everyday social situations. The culturally dominant narratives of ‘good mothering’ easily naturalise and normatise maternal agency. This study illustrates the process of adopting responsibility for the infant and the moral ambivalence that is inscribed in early maternal care. The data consist of four interview sessions with each of seven first-time mothers conducted during pregnancy and the first post-natal year. The interview…
