The objective was to study the effects of a lung recruitment procedure by stepwise increases of mean airway pressure upon organ blood flow and hemodynamics during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) versus pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) in experimental lung injury. Lung damage was induced by repeated lung lavages in seven anesthetized pigs (23–26 kg). International audience; Basaltic magmas can transport and release large amounts of volatiles into the atmosphere, especially in subduction zones, where slab-derived fluids enrich the mantle wedge. Depending on magma volatile content, basaltic volcanoes thus display a wide spectrum of eruptive styles, from common Strombolian-type activity to Plinian events. Mt. Structural framework and crustal characteristics of the Sardinia Channel Alpine transect in the central Mediterranean

Abstract The submerged area located between the Sardinia Channel and the western Sicily offshore has been investigated based on deep crustal and conventional seismic lines with the aim of illustrating the relationships between the crust and its overlying crystalline and sedimentary thrust wedge. Hydrothermal origin and age of jadeitites from Sierra del Convento Mélange (Eastern Cuba)

Jadeitite (jadeite jade) from Sierra del Convento (eastern Cuba) occurs in a subduction-related serpentinite-matrix melange associated with a variety of high-pressure tectonic blocks including garnet-amphibolites and related anatectic trondhjemites. The eastern Cuban jadeitite is massive and characterized by rare quartz inclusions and omphacite exsolution in jadeite crystals, as well as replacement or infilling by omphacite. Minor minerals include epidote, biotite, albite, phengite, titanite, rutile, zircon, and apatite. Traces of ancient mafic layers in the Tethys oceanic mantle

Abstract Oceanic basalts are formed by melting of a chemically and isotopically heterogeneous mantle source. The oceanic mantle probably resembles a marble cake containing layers of mafic rock – perhaps recycled ocean crust – stored in the mantle for >1 billion years. Many questions about the nature and distribution of these mantle heterogeneities remain. Here we show that lithological and isotopic traces of ancient mafic layers can still be seen in mantle rocks that have melted to form oceanic crust at a spreading centre in the Tethys Ocean. Abstract Serpentine muds from South Chamorro Seamount (SCS), drilled during ODP Leg 195 at Site 1200 contain metamafic clasts that experienced blueschist-facies metamorphism (including the critical mineral assemblage pumpellyite – Na-amphibole – epidote). These schists represent fragments from the actual slab–mantle interface at ~ 27 km depth. Their heterogeneous lithology with a metasomatic character indicates significant mobility of major elements in the Mariana forearc, a region of melange formation as it can also be observed in onland exposures such as the Catalina Schist. Monte Carlo simulations of Ising models and polymer blends in double wedge geometry: Evidence for novel types of critical phenomena

Abstract Two-phase coexistence in systems with free surfaces is enforced by boundary fields requiring the presence of an interface. Varying the temperature or the surface field, one can observe new types of phase transitions where the interface essentially disappears (it becomes bound to a wall or a wedge or a corner of the system). These transitions are simulated with Monte Carlo for Ising ferromagnets and polymer blends, applying finite size scaling analysis. Critical Wetting and Interface Localization—Delocalization Transition in a Double Wedge

Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling methods we study “wetting” in Ising systems in a L x L x L y pore with quadratic cross section. Antisymmetric surface fields H s act on the free L x L y surfaces of the opposing wedges, and periodic boundary conditions are applied along the y-direction. Our results represent the first simulational observation of fluctuation effects in three dimensional wetting phenomena and corroborate recent predictions on wedge filling. In the limit L → ∞ L y /L 3 = const the system exhibits a new type of phase transition, which is the analog of the “filling transition” that occurs in a single wedge. Observation of a tricritical wedge filling transition in the 3D Ising model

In this Letter we present evidences of the occurrence of a tricritical filling transition for an Ising model in a linear wedge. We perform Monte Carlo simulations in a double wedge where antisymmetric fields act at the top and bottom wedges, decorated with specific field acting only along the wegde axes. A finite-size scaling analysis of these simulations shows a novel critical phenomenon, which is distinct from the critical filling.
