The taboo against group contact: Hypothesis of Gypsy ontologization
2007
The concept of this article is that the symbolic relationships between human beings and animals serve as a model for the relationships between the majority and the ethnic minority. We postulate that there are two representations that serve to organize these relationships between human beings and animals: a domestic and a wild one. If the domestic animal is an index of human culture, the wild animal is an index of nature which man considers himself to share with the animal. With the wild representation, contact with the animal will be taboo, as it constitutes a threat to the anthropological difference. We offer the hypothesis that ontologization of the minority, that is, the substitution of …
Parental food-related behaviors and family meal frequencies: associations in Norwegian dyads of parents and preadolescent children.
2012
Background: Frequent family meals are associated with healthy dietary behaviors and other desirable outcomes in children and adolescents. Therefore, increased knowledge about factors that may increase the occurrence of family meals is warranted. The present study has its focus on the home food environment, and aims to explore potential associations between parent-reported feeding behaviors and child-reported family meal frequencies. Methods: Cross-sectional surveys were performed among 10-12-year-olds and their parents recruited from eighteen schools in southwest Norway. The child questionnaire included measures of family meal frequencies (breakfast, dinner and supper). The parent questionn…
Readiness to change among involuntarily and voluntarily admitted patients with substance use disorders
2019
AbstractBackgroundHealth care workers in the addiction field have long emphasised the importance of a patient’s motivation on the outcome of treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs). Many patients entering treatment are not yet ready to make the changes required for recovery and are often unprepared or sometimes unwilling to modify their behaviour. The present study compared stages of readiness to change and readiness to seek help among patients with SUDs involuntarily and voluntarily admitted to treatment to investigate whether changes in the stages of readiness at admission predict drug control outcomes at follow-up.MethodsThis prospective study included 65 involuntarily and 137 volu…

2021
Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are related to adverse physical and mental health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between parental alcohol problems and adversities during childhood and later in adulthood. Methods The 28,047 respondents were adults (> 18 years old) from the general population who participated in the Norwegian Counties Public Health Survey…

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child's Role in Litigation Before the Committee of Experts of the African Children's Charter
2020
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this article contributes to a reflection about the Convention's impact on domestic and international case law by investigating its role in, and implications for, litigation before the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. To this end, the analysis starts by tracing the core aspects of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and by comparing its content to that of the UN Convention. It then investigates the extent to which, in its practice, the African Committee has engaged with (or, indeed, ignored or overlooked) the UN Convention, and critically assess…
