Risk-Managed Industry Momentum and Momentum Crashes
2016
This is the first paper that investigates Barosso and Santa-Clara’s (2015) risk-managed momentum strategy in an industry momentum setting. We investigate traditional momentum strategies and Novy-Marx (2012) strategy. We also explore the impact of different variance forecast horizons on the average payoffs. We find that risk-managed industry momentum payoffs generate considerably higher returns than plain momentum strategies. Notably, risk-managed payoffs increase linearly as the time window for variance forecasts are contracted which is consistent for all different strategies.
Verkörperung: Bild und Experiment bei Edgar Wind und die aktuelle Lage der morphologischen Forschung
2021
Edgar Wind’s The Experiment and Metaphysics examines, in the sense of Goethe’s morphological project, the common structures of scientific and artistic thinking in the light of the reflective value of the image and the technological processes of research and construction of reality. In Wind’s philosophy of em- bodiment the image plays a role in the artistic field comparable to the function of experiments in science. The picture is neither a ‘copy’ nor just a ‘part’ of reality, but rather an ‘embodiment’: at the same time the ‘result’ of human activity and a ‘condition’ for all interpretation of the world. It opens up as an embodiment to a temporality which is not just linear but ‘configured’…
Association between climate and new daily diagnoses of COVID-19
2020
AbstractBackgroundAlthough evidence is accumulating that climate conditions may positively or negatively influence the scale of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks, uncertainty remains concerning the real impact of climate factors on viral transmission. Methods. The number of new daily cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Verona (Italy) was retrieved from the official website of Veneto Region, while information on daily weather parameters in the same area was downloaded from IlMeteo website, a renowned Italian technological company specialized in weather forecasts. The search period ranged between March 1 to November 11, 2020. The number of new daily COVID-19 cases and meteorological da…
Design, modelling, and analysis of a large floating dock for spar floating wind turbine installation
2020
Installation of floating wind turbines at the offshore site is a challenging task. A significant part of the time efficiency and costs are related to the installation methods which are sensitive to weather conditions. This study investigates a large floating dock concept, which can be used to shield a floating wind turbine during installation of tower, nacelle, and rotor onto a spar foundation. In this paper, the concept is described in detail, and a design optimisation is carried out using simple design constraints. Hydrodynamic analysis and dynamic response analysis of the coupled system of the optimum dock and spar are conducted. Two spars of different sizes are considered, and the motio…
Performance Evaluation of CANIT Algorithm in Presence of Congestion Losses
2001
In this paper, we analize by queuing-simulation CANIT (Congestion Avoidance with Normalized Interval of Time) algorithm performances in presence of congestion losses. In a former work [3], we proposed the algorithm (CANIT) for TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) congestion avoidance phase in order to improve fairness during this phase, and we showed that using CANIT algorithm in an environment without loss, instead of standard congestion avoidance algorithm improves both congestion avoidance fairness and bandwith utilization for long RTT connections. In this paper, we consider congestion losses and show that the fairness as well as the bandwith utilization are more efficient when using CANI…
Treatment with Nicotine derived Nitrosamine Ketone NNK Causes Disruption of Blood Brain Barrier BBB and Microglia Activation in Mice
2022
4-Methylnitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) is a nicotine metabolite produced within the tobacco plant, from combustion, and from metabolic breakdown. Cigarette Smoke (CS) continues to be a leading cause for decline of quality of life as well as deaths globally. While the link to poor health and eventually early death has been accepted for decades, it is increasingly recognized that smoking may contribute to a broad range of disorders. Epidemiologically, CS has been associated with neuroinflammation and several neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. While direct links are not fully understood, studies in a humanized flow-based in vitro b…
A Sliding Window-Based Method to Detect Selective Constraints in Protein-Coding Genes and Its Application to RNA Viruses
2002
Here we present a new sliding window-based method specially designed to detect selective constraints in specific regions of a multiple protein-coding sequence alignment. In contrast to previous window-based procedures, our method is based on a nonarbitrary statistical approach to find the appropriate codon-window size to test deviations of synonymous (d(S)) and nonsynonymous (d(N)) nucleotide substitutions from the expectation. The probabilities of d(N) and d(S) are obtained from simulated data and used to detect significant deviations of d(N) and d(S) in a specific window region of the real sequence alignment. The nonsynonymous-to-synonymous rate ratio (w = d(N)/d(S)) was used to highlight…
Structural Safety Assessment of Marine Operations From a Long-Term Perspective: A Case Study of Offshore Wind Turbine Blade Installation
2019
Abstract A marine operation is a complex non-routine activity of limited duration carried out in offshore environment. Due to safety reasons, these operations are normally performed within specific sea state limits, which are derived from numerical modelling and analysis of hazardous events. In view of the uncertainties in the assessment of structural responses under stochastic environmental conditions, these limiting curves correspond to a target structural failure probability recommended in offshore standards (for example, 10−4 per operation as specified by DNV-GL). However, one of the main limitations is that these curves do not reflect site-specific safety assessment. The current paper …
Numerical study of a concept for major repair and replacement of offshore wind turbine blades
2020
Repair and replacement of offshore wind turbine blades are necessary for current and future offshore wind turbines. To date, repair activities are often conducted using huge jack-up crane vessels and by applying a reverse installation procedure. Because of the high costs associated with installation and removal of offshore wind turbine components and the low profit margin of the offshore wind industry, alternative methods forinstallation and removal are needed. This paper introduces a novel concept for replacement or installation of offshore windturbine blades. The concept involves a medium-sized jack-up crane vessel and a tower climbing mechanism. This mechanism provides a stable platform …
Optimal maintenance system for offshore wind turbines
2010
In the last years, the industry of wind power generators has developed in many aspects. The offshore plants have some benefits over the onshore ones but their implementation is really expensive.Based in that cost, this paper describes the importance of applying an optimal maintenance based in priorities and cost. It also studies the maintenance types and proposes a scheme of maintenance for offshore plants.
