Nuclear charge radii of 62−80Zn and their dependence on cross-shell proton excitations

Nuclear charge radii of 62−80Zn have been determined using collinear laser spectroscopy of bunched ion beams at CERN-ISOLDE. The subtle variations of observed charge radii, both within one isotope and along the full range of neutron numbers, are found to be well described in terms of the proton excitations across the Z=28 shell gap, as predicted by large-scale shell model calculations. It comprehensively explains the changes in isomer-to-ground state mean square charge radii of 69−79Zn, the inversion of the odd-even staggering around N=40 and the odd-even staggering systematics of the Zn charge radii. Cellular nucleic acid binding proteins (CNBPs) represent a highly conserved protein family among vertebrates; they harbour seven tandem zinc finger repeats CCHC type and have been described as transcriptional and translational regulators. To date, there is little characterization of CNBP in invertebrates since its structure and function have been analysed solely in Drosophila melanogaster. However, no CNBP has been investigated in other arthropod systems. Catalytic Enantioselective Cyclopropylalkynylation of Aldimines Generated In Situ from α-Amido Sulfones

A convenient procedure of synthesis of N-carbamoyl-protected propargylic amines substituted with a cyclopropyl group from α-amido sulfones and cyclopropylacetylene is described. The reaction is catalyzed by a chiral BINOL-type zinc complex and provides the corresponding products in good yields and enantioselectivities.

Development of quadrupole collectivity in the neutron-rich Ni, Zn, Ge, and Se isotopes

An experiment was performed to study the collective properties of neutron-rich Ni, Zn, Ge, and Se isotopes. Of particular interest is the vicinity of the N = 50 and Z = 28 shell closures. For most neutron-rich nuclei in this region of the chart of nuclei the B(E2) values of the transitions from the ground to the first excited 2+ states are unknown. This information would give valuable insight into the changes in nuclear structure when going to more neutron-rich nuclei.

Zinc accelerates respiratory burst termination in human PMN

The respiratory burst of phagocytes is essential for human survival. Innate immune defence against pathogens relies strongly on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by the NADPH oxidase (NOX2). ROS kill pathogens while the translocation of electrons across the plasma membrane via NOX2 depolarizes the cell. Simultaneously, protons are released into the cytosol. Here, we compare freshly isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) to the granulocytes-like cell line PLB 985. We are recording ROS production while inhibiting the charge compensating and pH regulating voltage-gated proton channel (HV1). Phenoxyamidine Zn and Al Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Use in the Ring-Opening Polymerization of Lactide

Selective G-quadruplex stabilizers: Schiff-base metal complexes with anticancer activity

The affinity of three square-planar nickel(II) (1), copper(II) (2) and zinc(II) (3) Schiff-base complexes for wild-type human telomeric (h-Telo) and protooncogene c-myc G-quadruplex (G4) DNA was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and circular dichroism. DNA-binding constants (Kb) were determined by spectrophotometric titrations for both G4-DNA and B-DNA. The results obtained point out that the three metal complexes selectively bind G4-DNA with higher affinity, up to two orders of magnitude, with respect to B-DNA. On the G‐quadruplex binding of a new class of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) salphen‐like complexes

The involvement of non-canonical DNA structures, such as Gquadruplex (G4) DNA, in cancer development and progression has set the pace towards the renaissance of DNA-binding metal complexes. In this work, we report the DNA-binding of three Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) complexes of a salphen-like N4-donor ligand, bearing two imidazole groups condensed with a phenylenediamine moiety. Both duplex and G4 DNAs derived from human telomeres (hTelo), and a sequence mimicking the promoter of the oncogene myc (c-myc) were studied.
