I moved to Finland with my family three and a half years ago from Hungary. My older son (aged 11 then) spent a year in a Finnish preparatory class before he continued his studies in the 5th grade. He chose English as his A1 language because he had learnt it for three years in a Hungarian school. Despite his knowledge, the English home assignments proved to be very difficult for him to solve. The activity book relied greatly on the majority language: the instructions and many of the exercises required Finnish knowledge. Äitien yhteisöllisyys verkossa

Tässä kandidaatintutkielmassa perehdytään pienten lasten äitien väliseen kanssakäymiseen verkossa ja siitä mahdollisesti kehittyvään verkkoyhteisöllisyyteen. Tutkielmassa aihetta käsitellään aiempien tieteellisten tutkimusten kautta. Yhteiskunnan muuttuessa on huomattu monien ihmisten etsivän enenevissä määrin tukea ja seuraa itselleen verkosta. Tutkimusten mukaan näin tekevät myös pienten lasten vanhemmat. Pienten lasten äidit kärsivät jatkuvasta aikapulasta, joten heidän on luontevaa etsiä samanhenkistä seuraa verkosta lasten vuorokausirytmin sen salliessa. Useat Suomen mediassa viime vuosina julkaistut otsikot yhdessä kansainvälisten työn ja perhe-elämän yhteensovittamista tarkastelleiden tutkimusten kanssa ovat osoittaneet, että yksinhuoltajaäitien työ epätyypillisinä aikoina, esimerkiksi iltaisin, öisin ja viikonloppuisin, voi vahvistaa perheiden arjessaan kohtaamia haasteita. Äitien vuorotyö sekä työn ja perhe-elämän yhteensovittamisen haasteet voivat heijastua kielteisesti myös lapsen hyvinvointiin. Vaikka Suomessa naisten epätyypilliset työajat ovat yleisiä, tutkimustietoa yksinhuoltajaäitien kokemuksista ei ole juuri ollut saatavilla. Äidin huolet lapsensa koulunkäynnistä : mikä selittää?

Tämä pro gradu –tutkielma pohjautuu Jyväskylän yliopiston ”Oppiminen ja motivaatio” - hankkeen ”Alkuportaat – Lapset, vanhemmat ja opettajat yhteistyössä koulutien alussa” - seurantatutkimukseen. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin vuosina 2011 lasten ollessa neljännellä luokalla. Tutkittavia äitejä oli 125. Tutkimuksessa oltiin kiinnostuneita siitä, millaisia huolenaiheita äideillä oli liittyen lapsen koulunkäyntiin. Huolenaiheita kysyttiin kyselylomakkeella. Lisäksi oltiin kiinnostuneita siitä, selittävätkö äidin sosiaalinen tausta, koulutustaso, vanhemmuuden stressi ja masentuneisuus äitien huolia. Background Mothers with lifelong care responsibilities might involuntarily be non-employed or work part-time, both of which are defined as “underemployment.” This study aimed to investigate who these underemployed mothers are and what are the factors associated with such employment hardship when having a child with intellectual disability (ID). This study aimed to examine the longitudinal associations of maternal body mass index (BMI), weight status in childhood and late adulthood and device-measured total physical activity (TPA) in older age. The study involves 552 participants from Helsinki Birth Cohort Study who were born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1934-1944. TPA was measured with a multisensory body monitor at a mean age of 70 years and expressed in metabolic equivalent of task hours/day (METh/d). Childhood overweight (BMI > 85th percentile) was based on school health records at 6-7 years of age, and late adulthood overweight (BMI >= 25 kg/m(2)) was based on clinical measurements at the mean age of 61 years.
