On the uniform sampling of CIELAB color space and the number of discernible colors

This paper presents a useful algorithmic strategy to sample uniformly the CIELAB color space based on close packed hexagonal grid. This sampling scheme has been used successfully in different research works from computational color science to color image processing. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the relevance and the accuracy of the hexagonal grid sampling method applied to the CIELAB color space. The second objective of this paper is to show that the number of color samples computed depends on the application and on the color gamut boundary considered. As demonstration, we use this sampling to support a discussion on the number of discernible colors related to a JND.

A CFA produces a mosaic image, and normally a subsequent CFA demosaick-ing algorithm interpolates the mosaic image and estimates the full-resolution colour image. Among various types of optical aberrations from which a mosaic image may suffer, chromatic aberration (CA) influences the spatial and spectral correlation through the artefacts such as blur and mis-registration, which demosaicking also relies on. Fast fringe pattern phase demodulation using FIR Hilbert transformers

This paper suggests the use of FIR Hilbert transformers to extract the phase of fringe patterns. This method is computationally faster than any known spatial method that produces wrapped phase maps. Also, the algorithm does not require any parameters to be adjusted which are dependent upon the specific fringe pattern that is being processed, or upon the particular setup of the optical fringe projection system that is being used. Snapshot hyperspectral system for noninvasive skin blood oxygen saturation monitoring

The present study introduces recently developed compact hyperspectral snapshot system (device and software) for skin oxygen saturation monitoring. This prototype device involves compact snapshot hyperspectral camera, multi-wavelength illuminator, optical filter and crossed polarizers. The device was validated using reference color samples and and in-vivo during finger arterial occlusion tests. The prototype system demonstrated good performance of skin hyperspectral measurements in spectral range of 500-630nm. The results confirmed reliability of developed system for in-vivo assessment of skin blood oxygen saturation.

GPU-accelerated integral imaging and full-parallax 3D display using stereo-plenoptic camera system

Abstract In this paper, we propose a novel approach to produce integral images ready to be displayed onto an integral-imaging monitor. Our main contribution is the use of commercial plenoptic camera, which is arranged in a stereo configuration. Our proposed set-up is able to record the radiance, spatial and angular, information simultaneously in each different stereo position. We illustrate our contribution by composing the point cloud from a pair of captured plenoptic images, and generate an integral image from the properly registered 3D information. A Novel Marking Reader for Progressive Addition Lenses Based on Gabor Holography

PURPOSE Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are marked with permanent engraved marks (PEMs) at standardized locations. Permanent engraved marks are very useful through the manufacturing and mounting processes, act as locator marks to re-ink the removable marks, and contain useful information about the PAL. Robustness of 40 Gb/s ASK modulation formats in the practical system infrastructure.

In this work, we analyzed by means of numerical and laboratory experiments the resilience of 40 Gb/s amplitude shift keying modulation formats to transmission impairments in standard single-mode fiber lines as well as to optical filtering introduced by the optical add/drop multiplexer cascade. Our study is a pre-requisite to assess the implementation of cost-effective 40 Gb/s modulation technology in next generation high bit-rate robust optical transport networks. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
