Abstract Contamination associated with metals is a critical concern related to their toxicity, persistence, and bio-accumulation. Trace elements are partitioned into several chemical forms, which some are more labile during fluctuations in the environment. Effect of solid waste landfill organic pollutants on groundwater in three areas of Sicily (Italy) characterized by different vulnerability

The aim of this study was to obtain information on the presence and levels of hazardous organic pollutants in groundwater located close to solid waste landfills. Fate of aerobic granular sludge in the long-term: The role of EPSs on the clogging of granular sludge porosity

This work aims to investigate the stability of aerobic granular sludge in the long term, focusing on the clogging of the granular sludge porosity exerted by the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). The effects of different cycle lengths (short and long-term cycle) on the granular sludge stability were investigated. Results obtained outlined that during the short duration cycle, the formation and breakage of the aerobic granules were continuously observed. Linear instability of the vertical throughflow in a horizontal porous layer saturated by a power-law fluid

Abstract The effects of the vertical throughflow of a non-Newtonian power-law fluid on the onset of convective instability in a horizontal porous layer are investigated. The extended Darcy’s model of momentum diffusion is employed together with the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. A stationary basic solution for the vertical throughflow is determined analytically. The basic velocity and temperature fields turn out to be independent of the non-Newtonian rheology. A linear stability analysis is carried out, leading to a fourth-order eigenvalue problem. Assessing productivity changes in water companies: a comparison of the Luenberger and Luenberger-Hicks-Moorsteen productivity indicators

Interest in evaluating productivity changes in water companies has increased in recent years. In this paper, for the first time, we employ the Luenberger-Hicks-Moorsteen Productivity Indicator (LHMPI) to evaluate productivity changes in a sample of Chilean water companies from 2010 to 2016. Productivity change estimations obtained by both the Luenberger Productivity Indicator (LPI) and the LHMPI are compared. Occurrence of illicit drugs in two wastewater treatment plants in the South of Italy

In this study the occurrence and the behavior of illicit drugs and their metabolites have been investigated for two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) (namely, WWTP-1 and WWTP-2) located in Sicily (island of Italy). Abstract The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays a key role in the regulation of gene expression in metabolic machinery and detoxification systems. In the recent years, this receptor has attracted interest as a therapeutic target for immunological, oncogenic and inflammatory conditions.
