We confirmed in a population-based cohort that irisin serum concentrations are independently correlated with the habitual level of physical activity, but we also observed an independent correlation with serum concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), thus suggesting that inflammation may influence irisin production. Involvement of insulin resistance in normoglycaemic obese patients with periodontitis: A cross-sectional study

Aim We explored the association between obesity and periodontitis with the aim of determining the possible role of insulin resistance (IR) in this relationship. Materials and Methods A total of 212 subjects –110 obese and 102 lean individuals– were evaluated for periodontal disease and divided according to IR: a lean group without IR (LWIR); an obese group without IR (OWIR); and an obese group with IR (OIR). Focus group study to identify the central facets of fear of hypoglycaemia in people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Aims To determine key worries about hypoglycaemia among insulin-using adults with Type 2 diabetes using a focus group approach. Methods Thirteen focus groups were conducted in three diabetes outpatient care units and one peer support group was set up, in Germany. A total of 64 insulin-dependent adults with Type 2 diabetes (36.5% women, mean age 65.2 ± 11.0 years) discussed their worries about hypoglycaemia. Left ventricular hypertrophy in chronic kidney disease: A diagnostic criteria comparison.

Background and aims: CKD patients have a high prevalence of LVH and this leads to an increase of cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and left ventricular geometry in a group of 293 hypertensive patients with stage 2–5 chronic kidney disease (CKD), compared with 289 essential hypertensive patients with normal renal function.
