The correlation of functional pain and psychological distress: a study in Italian school students.
2019
Abstract Background Functional Pain (not detectable organic cause) is often associated with psychological problems and, according to literature, it can lead to severe manifestations. The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between functional pain and psychological disagreement, in a series of school students. Methods An observational questionnaire-based study was performed. A questionnaire was given to a group of students of primary school; the following data were collected in the questionnaire: a) sex and age; b) functional pain; c) relation with relatives, teachers and schoolfellows: d) school failure. Statistical methods: P-value of concordance test and P-value of cor…
Does Stress Mediate the Association Between Emotional Intelligence and Life Satisfaction During Adolescence?
2019
Background Based on Mayer and Salovey's model of emotional intelligence, this study examined whether perceived stress mediates the interplay of emotional intelligence and life satisfaction for girls and boys during early and middle adolescence. Methods Using multigroup structural equation modeling with questionnaire data from a sample of Spanish adolescent students (N = 800; MAge T1 = 14.02, MAge T2 = 15.00, SD = 1.21) in 2 waves (T1 = March 2015; T2 = December 2015). Results Results of multigroup structural equation modeling indicated no group differences between boys and girls in early adolescence (7th and 8th grade) and middle adolescence (9th and 10th grade), as stress function as media…
Leisure activity patterns and their associations with overweight: A prospective study among adolescents
2007
We examined longitudinal associations between individual leisure activities (television viewing, video viewing, computer games, listening to music, board games, musical instrument playing, reading, arts, crafts, socializing, clubs or scouts, sports, outdoor activities) and being overweight using logistic regression and latent class analysis in a cohort of Finnish twins responding to self-report questionnaires at 11–12 (N=5184), 14, and 17 years. We also studied activity patterns (“Active and sociable”, “Active but less sociable”, “Passive but sociable”, “Passive and solitary”) thought to represent different lifestyles. Among boys, activity patterns did not predict becoming overweight, but s…
Effects of an intervention to prevent the bullying in first-grade secondary schools of Palermo, Italy: the BIAS study
2019
Abstract Background Bullying is one of the most common expressions of violence in the peer context during school years. This study investigates the prevalence of bullying and the short-term effects on students’ bullying perceptions of a preventive intervention conducted among teachers of first-grade secondary schools in Palermo, Sicily (Italy). Methods Between the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 school years, a pre-post intervention study was conducted among nine school institutions, sampled and categorized by neighbourhood socioeconomic index. A questionnaire investigating physical, verbal, and indirect bullying, the role of observers, prosociality, and resiliency in bullying was administered befo…
Anophthalmia-Waardenburg syndrome with expanding phenotype: does neural crest play a role?
2007
We describe a child with bilateral anophthalmia, limb anomalies, skin lesions, cerebral malformations, epilepsy, and mental retardation. This patient, according to eponymous classification, should fit into the Anophthalmia-Waardenburg syndrome, although he also presents cutaneous and cerebral manifestations never reported in this syndrome until now. These clinical findings could be explained by the new classification of brain malformations, which takes into account the role of neural crest in Waardenburg syndrome.
Thoracic Aortic Intima-Media Thickness in Preschool Children Born Small for Gestational Age
2018
To assess thoracic aortic intima-media thickness (aIMT) as a marker of thoracic aortic remodeling in children born small for gestational age (SGA).We assessed thoracic aIMT, carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), and pulse wave velocity (PWV) in 239 patients (117 SGA; 122 appropriate for gestational age controls) age 6-8 years. Each SGA participant was matched 1:1 based on sex, gestational age, and birth date. Thoracic aIMT was determined by 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography.SGA children showed a significant increase in both aIMT (0.89 mm [0.12] vs 0.79 mm [0.11], P .001) and cIMT (.50 mm [0.05] vs 0.49 mm [0.04], P .001) compared with appropriate for gestational age controls, …
Dilated azygos arch mimicking an aortic arch anomaly during thoracic surgery
2017
Cardiovascular malformations are frequently associated in patients with esophageal atresia (EA). We observed azygos continuation mimicking an aortic arch anomaly in four newborns with type III EA. They presented concomitant rib anomalies indicating a common developmental defect. Foreknowledge is important for planning thoracotomy or interventional cardiac catheterization in this population.
Guideline on management of the acute asthma attack in children by Italian Society of Pediatrics
2018
Abstract Background Acute asthma attack is a frequent condition in children. It is one of the most common reasons for emergency department (ED) visit and hospitalization. Appropriate care is fundamental, considering both the high prevalence of asthma in children, and its life-threatening risks. Italian Society of Pediatrics recently issued a guideline on the management of acute asthma attack in children over age 2, in ambulatory and emergency department settings. Methods The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology was adopted. A literature search was performed using the Cochrane Library and Medline/PubMed databases, retrieving studies in Englis…
An association analysis to identify genetic variants linked to asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis in a cohort of Sicilian children
2018
Abstract Asthma and rhino-conjunctivitis are common chronic diseases in childhood. In this cross-sectional study, we performed a gene association analysis with current asthma and rhino-conjunctivitis in a cohort of Sicilian children aged 10–15 years. Overall, our findings reveal the importance of different genetic variants at 4p14, 16p12.1, 17q12, 6p12.2 and 17q21.1, identifying possible candidate genes responsible for susceptibility to asthma and rhino-conjunctivitis.
Multivariate analysis on complications of central venous access devices in children with cancer and severe disease influenced by catheter tip positio…
2019
Abstract Context Reliable long-term central venous access device (CVAD) is essential for the management of pediatric patients with cancer or chronic diseases. However, there is no general consensus for optimal catheter tip location and vessel insertion site in children. Objective This single center study analyzes the risk of complications associated with long-term upper body CVAD and evaluates them with respect to catheter tip location as well as vessel insertion site. Design Pediatric patients who received long-term upper body CVAD from January 2008 through April 2017 and underwent radiographic documentation of the tip location were retrospectively included in the study. Data on demographi…
