We report that several viruses from the human enterovirus group B cause massive vimentin rearrangements during lytic infection. Comprehensive studies suggested that viral protein synthesis was triggering the vimentin rearrangements. Blocking the host cell vimentin dynamics with β, β'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) did not significantly affect the production of progeny viruses and only moderately lowered the synthesis of structural proteins such as VP1. In contrast, the synthesis of the nonstructural proteins 2A, 3C, and 3D was drastically lowered. C4-dicarboxylates, such as fumarate, L-malate and L-aspartate represent substrates for anaerobic growth of Escherichia coli by fumarate respiration. Here, we determined whether C4-dicarboxylate metabolism as well as fumarate respiration contribute to colonization of the mammalian intestinal tract. Metabolite profiling revealed that the murine small intestine contained high and low levels of L-aspartate and L-malate, respectively, whereas fumarate was nearly absent. Fluorescent pseudomonads harboring type III secretion genes are enriched in the mycorrhizosphere of Medicago truncatula

Type III secretion systems (T3SSs) of Gram-negative bacteria mediate direct interactions with eukaryotic cells. Diversity of root-associated fluorescent pseudomonads as affected by ferritin overexpression in tobacco

A transgenic tobacco overexpressing ferritin (P6) was recently shown to accumulate more iron than the wild type (WT), leading to a reduced availability of iron in the rhizosphere and shifts in the pseudomonad community. The impact of the transgenic line on the community of fluorescent pseudomonads was assessed. The treatment of enteric bacterial infections using oral bacteriophage therapy can be challenging since the harsh acidic stomach environment renders phages inactive during transit through the gastrointestinal tract. Viral diversity and evolution play a central role in processes such as disease emergence, vaccine failure, drug resistance, and virulence. However, significant challenges remain to better understand and manage these processes. Here, we discuss five of these challenges. These include improving our ability to predict viral evolution, developing more relevant experimental evolutionary systems, integrating viral dynamics and evolution at different scales, more thoroughly characterizing the virosphere, and deepening our understanding of virus-virus interactions. Sensing of O 2 and nitrate by bacteria: alternative strategies for transcriptional regulation of nitrate respiration by O 2 and nitrate

Many bacteria are able to use O2 and nitrate as alternative electron acceptors for respiration. Strategies for regulation in response to O2 and nitrate can vary considerably. In the paradigmatic system of E. coli (and γ-proteobacteria), regulation by O2 and nitrate is established by the O2 -sensor FNR and the two-component system NarX-NarL (for nitrate regulation). Expression of narGHJI is regulated by the binding of FNR and NarL to the promoter.
