Maximal Operators with Respect to the Numerical Range

Let $\mathfrak{n}$ be a nonempty, proper, convex subset of $\mathbb{C}$. The $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are defined as the operators having numerical ranges in $\mathfrak{n}$ and are maximal with this property. Typical examples of these are the maximal symmetric (or accretive or dissipative) operators, the associated to some sesquilinear forms (for instance, to closed sectorial forms), and the generators of some strongly continuous semi-groups of bounded operators. In this paper the $\mathfrak{n}$-maximal operators are studied and some characterizations of these in terms of the resolvent set are given.

The Use of Game World Tasks Concepts in Higher Education

The link between tasks presented in games and tasks used in higher education might have more in common than we think. Analysing how tasks work in games and applying those structures to higher education teaching can enable teachers to develop more creative, situated and exciting tasks for their students. In addition, it can improve communication and feedback. Analysis shows that tasks are an area where elements of gamification work. Abstract In this paper we study groups G generated by two subgroups A and B such that 〈 a , b 〉 is nilpotent of class at most 2 for all a ∈ A and b ∈ B . A detailed description of the structure of such groups is obtained, generalizing the classical result of Hopkins and Levi on 2-Engel groups.

Filament sets and homogeneous continua

Abstract New tools are introduced for the study of homogeneous continua. The subcontinua of a given continuum are classified into three types: filament , non-filament , and ample , with ample being a subcategory of non-filament. The richness of the collection of ample subcontinua of a homogeneous continuum reflects where the space lies in the gradation from being locally connected at one extreme to indecomposable at another. Applications are given to the general theory of homogeneous continua and their hyperspaces.
Existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of positive solutions for nonlinear eigenvalue problems

We study the existence of positive solutions for perturbations of the classical eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet $p-$Laplacian. We consider three cases. In the first the perturbation is $(p-1)-$sublinear near $+\infty$, while in the second the perturbation is $(p-1)-$superlinear near $+\infty$ and in the third we do not require asymptotic condition at $+\infty$. Using variational methods together with truncation and comparison techniques, we show that for $\lambda\in (0, \widehat{\lambda}_1)$ -$\lambda>0$ is the parameter and $\widehat{\lambda}_1$ being the principal eigenvalue of $\left(-\Delta_p, W^{1, p}_0(\Omega)\right)$ -we have positive solutions, while for $\lambda\geq \widehat{\…
On the gonality and the slope of a fibered surface

Abstract Let f : X → B be a locally non-trivial relatively minimal fibration of curves of genus g ≥ 2 . We obtain a lower bound of the slope λ ( f ) increasing with the gonality of the general fiber of f. In particular, we show that λ ( f ) ≥ 4 provided that f is non-hyperelliptic and g ≥ 16 .
New construction of algebro-geometric solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation and their numerical evaluation

An independent derivation of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions is presented using an approach based on Fay's identities. Reality and smoothness conditions are studied for these solutions from the point of view of the topology of the underlying real hyperelliptic surface. The solutions are studied numerically for concrete examples, also in the limit where the surface degenerates to the Riemann sphere, and where solitons and cuspons appear.
Constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Minkowski space

Abstract We first define a complex angle between two oriented spacelike planes in 4-dimensional Minkowski space, and then study the constant angle surfaces in that space, i.e. the oriented spacelike surfaces whose tangent planes form a constant complex angle with respect to a fixed spacelike plane. This notion is the natural Lorentzian analogue of the notion of constant angle surfaces in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We prove that these surfaces have vanishing Gauss and normal curvatures, obtain representation formulas for the constant angle surfaces with regular Gauss maps and construct constant angle surfaces using PDE’s methods.
