Does Glycemic Control Modulate the Impairment of NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation in Type 2 Diabetes?

2019

Since mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with NOD-like receptor family protein 3 (NLRP3) activation in type 2 diabetes (T2D), which can eventually lead to an impaired immune response, we set out to determine if glycemic control modulates the effects of T2D on the NLRP3 inflammasome. We have studied leukocytes from 61 diabetic patients [25 with glycated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) 7% and 36 with HbA(1c) 8%] and 40 healthy controls. Total and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was enhanced in T2D patients, and mitochondrial ROS was more pronounced in those with poor glycemic control. Levels of gene and protein expression of NLRP3 were decreased in both diabetic groups and mo…

Small, dense low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are predictors of cardio- and cerebro-vascular events in subjects with the metabolic syndrome

2009

Summary Objective  Small, dense low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are a feature of the metabolic syndrome (MS) but their predictive role still remains to be established. We performed a 2-year follow-up study in 124 subjects with MS (63 ± 6 years), as defined by the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute guidelines, to assess clinical and biochemical predictors of cerebro- and cardio-vascular events. Methods and results  Beyond traditional cardiovascular risk factors, we measured LDL size and subclasses by gradient gel electrophoresis. Clinical events were registered in the 25% of subjects. At univariate analysis subjects with events had increased prevalence of elev…

A novel flash glucose monitoring system in patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2: which are the pieces of evidence for payer decision-makers?

2018

A rigorous health technology assessment is necessary to evaluate a new technology. However, healthcare regulatory agencies have less restrictive rules about medical devices, despite some recent warnings about this relevant matter. The evaluation should have at least two key issues, which require attention. The first one is its effectiveness, and the second one is its economic sustainability. In this paper, we deal with a novel glucose-sensing technology as a case study to examine the matter in depth. An evidence-based point of view is used to highlight this important issue.

Unrecognised cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes: is it time to act earlier?

2018

Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most significant prognostic factor in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, a significant number of individuals may develop CVD that does not present with the classic angina-related or heart failure symptoms. In these cases, CVD may seem to be ‘silent’ or ‘asymptomatic’, but may be more accurately characterised as unrecognised diabetic cardiac impairment. An initial step to raise awareness of unrecognised CVD in individuals with T2D would be to reach a consensus regarding the terminology used to describe this phenomenon. By standardising the terminologies, and agreeing on the implementation of an efficient screening program, it is anti…

A double mean field equation related to a curvature prescription problem

2019

We study a double mean field-type PDE related to a prescribed curvature problem on compacts surfaces with boundary. We provide a general blow-up analysis, then a Moser-Trudinger inequality, which gives energy-minimizing solutions for some range of parameters. Finally, we provide existence of min-max solutions for a wider range of parameters, which is dense in the plane if $$ is not simply connected.

Uniqueness of diffusion on domains with rough boundaries

2016

Let $\Omega$ be a domain in $\mathbf R^d$ and $h(\varphi)=\sum^d_{k,l=1}(\partial_k\varphi, c_{kl}\partial_l\varphi)$ a quadratic form on $L_2(\Omega)$ with domain $C_c^\infty(\Omega)$ where the $c_{kl}$ are real symmetric $L_\infty(\Omega)$-functions with $C(x)=(c_{kl}(x))>0$ for almost all $x\in \Omega$. Further assume there are $a, \delta>0$ such that $a^{-1}d_\Gamma^{\delta}\,I\le C\le a\,d_\Gamma^{\delta}\,I$ for $d_\Gamma\le 1$ where $d_\Gamma$ is the Euclidean distance to the boundary $\Gamma$ of $\Omega$. We assume that $\Gamma$ is Ahlfors $s$-regular and if $s$, the Hausdorff dimension of $\Gamma$, is larger or equal to $d-1$ we also assume a mild uniformity property for $\Omega$ i…

Querelle épigraphique entre deux savants : l’exemple de la correspondance, publiée dans la Revue archéologique de 1847, entre Antoine-Jean Letronne e…

2020

Although Roman inscriptions have attracted interest since the Renaissance, epigraphy was not acknowledged as a science in its own right, with its own ruleset and methods, until the mid-19th century. Henceforth every newly discovered inscription was duly documented and distributed across an ever-growing and influential network of European scholars, giving birth to an extensive system of scholarly correspondence connecting every individual researcher with the community, from the provincial antiquarian who, as a precursor to « field archaeology », would discover the inscriptions, to the Parisian scholar who would gather and examine every inscription sent his way. One such epistolary intercours…

Oscillatory integrals and fractal dimension

2021

Theory of singularities has been closely related with the study of oscillatory integrals. More precisely, the study of critical points is closely related to the study of asymptotic of oscillatory integrals. In our work we investigate the fractal properties of a geometrical representation of oscillatory integrals. We are motivated by a geometrical representation of Fresnel integrals by a spiral called the clothoid, and the idea to produce a classification of singularities using fractal dimension. Fresnel integrals are a well known class of oscillatory integrals. We consider oscillatory integral $$ I(\tau)=\int_{; ; \mathbb{; ; R}; ; ^n}; ; e^{; ; i\tau f(x)}; ; \phi(x) dx, $$ for large value…

Left braces and the quantum Yang-Baxter equation

2019

[EN] Braces were introduced by Rump in 2007 as a useful tool in the study of the set-theoretic solutions of the Yang¿Baxter equation. In fact, several aspects of the theory of finite left braces and their applications in the context of the Yang¿Baxter equation have been extensively investigated recently. The main aim of this paper is to introduce and study two finite brace theoretical properties associated with nilpotency, and to analyse their impact on the finite solutions of the Yang¿Baxter equation.

Determination of Brain Death/Death by Neurologic Criteria

2020

Importance: There are inconsistencies in concept, criteria, practice, and documentation of brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC) both internationally and within countries. Objective: To formulate a consensus statement of recommendations on determination of BD/DNC based on review of the literature and expert opinion of a large multidisciplinary, international panel. Process: Relevant international professional societies were recruited to develop recommendations regarding determination of BD/DNC. Literature searches of the Cochrane, Embase, and MEDLINE databases included January 1, 1992, through April 2020 identified pertinent articles for review. Because of the lack of high-quali…
