Intrahepatic myeloid-cell aggregates enable local proliferation of CD8+T cells and successful immunotherapy against chronic viral liver infection

2013

Chronic infection is difficult to overcome because of exhaustion or depletion of cytotoxic effector CD8(+) T cells (cytotoxic T lymphoytes (CTLs)). Here we report that signaling via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) induced intrahepatic aggregates of myeloid cells that enabled the population expansion of CTLs (iMATEs: 'intrahepatic myeloid-cell aggregates for T cell population expansion') without causing immunopathology. In the liver, CTL proliferation was restricted to iMATEs that were composed of inflammatory monocyte-derived CD11b(+) cells. Signaling via tumor-necrosis factor (TNF) caused iMATE formation that facilitated costimulation dependent on the receptor OX40 for expansion of the CTL popu…

A detailed study of the rise phase of a long duration X-ray flare in the young star TWA 11B

2010

We analyzed a long duration flare observed in a serendipitous XMM-Newton detection of the M star CD-39 7717B (TWA 11B), member of the young stellar association TW Hya (~ 8 Myr). Only the rise phase (with a duration of ~ 35 ks) and possibly the flare peak were observed. We took advantage of the high count-rate of the X-ray source to carry out a detailed analysis of its spectrum during the whole exposure. After a careful analysis, we interpreted the rise phase as resulting from the ignition of a first group of loops (event A) which triggered a subsequent two-ribbon flare (event B). Event A was analyzed using a single-loop model, while a two-ribbon model was applied for event B. Loop semi-leng…

Compressed Drinfeld associators

2004

Drinfeld associator is a key tool in computing the Kontsevich integral of knots. A Drinfeld associator is a series in two non-commuting variables, satisfying highly complicated algebraic equations - hexagon and pentagon. The logarithm of a Drinfeld associator lives in the Lie algbera L generated by the symbols a,b,c modulo [a,b]=[b,c]=[c,a]. The main result is a description of compressed associators that satisfy the compressed pentagon and hexagon in the quotient L/[[L,L],[L,L]]. The key ingredient is an explicit form of Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff formula in the case when all commutators commute.

CD11b Regulates Fungal Outgrowth but Not Neutrophil Recruitment in a Mouse Model of Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis

2019

Abstract Background and Aims: In immunosuppressed individuals Aspergillus (A.) fumigatus is a frequent cause of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) which is highly associated with relevant morbidity and mortality. Moreover, it often occurs in patients suffering from leukocyte-adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD1) which is triggered by a functional loss of CD18 in ß2 integrin receptors as these receptors consist of an alpha subunit (CD11a-CD11d) and CD18 as the common beta subunit. ß2 integrin receptors are differentially expressed by leukocytes, and are required for cell-cell interaction, transendothelial migration, uptake of opsonized pathogens, and cell signaling processes. Here, we asked …

On several notions of complexity of polynomial progressions

2021

For a polynomial progression $$(x,\; x+P_1(y),\; \ldots,\; x+P_{t}(y)),$$ we define four notions of complexity: Host-Kra complexity, Weyl complexity, true complexity and algebraic complexity. The first two describe the smallest characteristic factor of the progression, the third one refers to the smallest-degree Gowers norm controlling the progression, and the fourth one concerns algebraic relations between terms of the progressions. We conjecture that these four notions are equivalent, which would give a purely algebraic criterion for determining the smallest Host-Kra factor or the smallest Gowers norm controlling a given progression. We prove this conjecture for all progressions whose ter…

18-hydroxylation in the Y-1 adrenal cell line: response to ACTH and to culture conditions.

1992

The 18-hydroxylation of deoxycorticosterone in the Y-1 adrenal cell line was studied under various incubation and cell culture conditions and compared to 11 beta-hydroxylation. Repeated incubation of the substrate increased both 18- and 11 beta-hydroxylation in the Y-1 cells. Furthermore, both 18- and 11 beta-hydroxylation were increased with increased serum concentration and prolonged incubation time. While the increase in 11 beta-hydroxylation seemed to be independent of the type of serum, 18-hydroxylation was much more important in cells cultured in fetal or newborn calf serum supplemented medium than in those cultured in horse serum supplemented medium. As expected, ACTH treatment incre…
