The trophic structure of the pipefish community (Pisces: Syngnathidae) from a western Mediterranean seagrass meadow based on stable isotope analysis

2004

Syngnathus abaster andSyngnathus typhle (Pisces: Syngnathidae) from a dense Cymodocea nodesa meadow in the western Mediterranean Stagnone di Marsala (Italy) were studied using δ13N and δ15N analysis. Because of the presence of these two species in the same habitat and the specialized parental care by the male, the effect of species and sex on the isotopic composition was also studied to investigate the different feeding strategies between and within species.S. abaster andS. typhle exhibited enriched13C and15N values throughout the sampling period (mean ±SE, δ13C =−10.5±1.8‰ and−10.8±2.0‰, δ15N=11.9±0.7‰ and 10.6±1.0%., respectively), suggesting that these species receive their energy mainly…

Stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) sclerochronology of Callovian (Middle Jurassic) bivalves (Gryphaea (Bilobissa) dilobotes) and belemnites (Cylindroteut…

2014

Abstract Incremental δ 18 O and δ 13 C signals were obtained from three well-preserved specimens of Cylindroteuthis puzosiana and from three well-preserved specimens of Gryphaea ( Bilobissa ) dilobotes from the Peterborough Member of the Oxford Clay Formation (Cambridgeshire, England). Through-ontogeny (sclerochronological) δ 18 O data from G. ( B. ) dilobotes appear to faithfully record seasonal temperature variations in benthic Callovian waters of the study area, which range from c . 14 °C to c . 17 °C (arithmetic mean temperature c . 15 °C). Water depth is estimated to have been in the region of c . 50 m, based upon comparisons between these data, previously published non-incremental sea…

Interaction of a Recombinant Prion Protein with Organo-Mineral Complexes as Assessed by FT-IR and CPMAS 13C NMR Analysis

2010

Prion proteins are considered as the main agents for the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE). The misfolded form, PrP Sc , which is also indicated as the etiological agent for TSE, exhibits high resistance to degradation in environmental processes. Soil contamination by prion proteins is a real environmental issue since contaminated soils can become potential reservoir and diffuser for TSE infectivity. In this work, the interaction of prion protein with organo- mineral complexes was studied by using a recombinant non pathogenic prion protein and a model soil system. This latter was represented by a soil manganese mineral coated with polymerized catechol. FT-IR spectra showed ami…

Effect of Heating Time and Temperature on the Chemical Characteristics of Biochar from Poultry Manure

2014

Poultry manure (PM) chars were obtained at different temperatures and charring times. Chemical-physical characterization of the different PM chars was conducted by cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) (13)C NMR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. CPMAS (13)C NMR spectra showed that the chemical composition of PM char is dependent on production temperature rather than on production duration. Aromatic and alkyl domains in the PM chars obtained at the lowest temperatures remained unchanged at all heating times applied for their production. The PM char obtained at the highest temperature consisted only of aromatic structures having chemical nature that also appeared invariant with hea…

Structure of a polysaccharide from the lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio vulnificus clinical isolate YJ016 containing 2-acetimidoylamino-2-deoxy-L-galactu…

2009

Abstract A polysaccharide isolated after mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio vulnificus clinical isolate YJ016 was found to contain l -Fuc, d -GlcpNAc, 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy- d -glucose (di-N-acetylbacillosamine, d -QuiNAc4NAc), and 2-acetimidoylamino-2-deoxy- l -galacturonic acid ( l -GalNAmA). The last sugar derivative was confirmed by correlations for nitrogen-linked protons in 2D TOCSY and ROESY spectra measured in a H2O–D2O mixture. The following structure of the polysaccharide was established by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, including 2D ROESY and 1H,13C HMBC experiments: Download : Download full-size image where the degree of 6-O-acetylation of the later…
