The Development of Teachers' and Their Students' Social and Emotional Learning During the “Learning to Be Project”-Training Course in Five European C…
2021
This study was funded by a project Learning to Be: Development of Practices and Methodologies for Assessing Social, Emotional and Health Skills within Education Systems (#4120034) in the framework of Erasmus+ KA3 program (582955-EPP-1-2016-2-LT-EPPKA3-PI-POLICY). We are also grateful for funding by the Academy of Finland (#308352) and Finnish Strategic Research Council (#327242).
Friends, academic achievement, and school engagement during adolescence : A social network approach to peer influence and selection effects
2018
Abstract Peers become increasingly important socializing agents for academic behaviors and attitudes during adolescence. This study investigated peer influence and selection effects on adolescents' emotional (i.e., flow in schoolwork, school burnout, school value), cognitive (i.e., school effort), and behavioral (i.e., truancy) engagement in school. A social network approach was used to examine students of post-comprehensive education in Finland (N = 1419; mean age = 16). Students were asked to nominate peers to generate peer networks and to describe their own school engagement at two time points (one year apart). Network analyses revealed that the degree to which peer influence and selecti…

Chasing Weak Forces: Hierarchically Assembled Helicates as a Probe for the Evaluation of the Energetics of Weak Interactions.
2017
London dispersion forces are the weakest interactions between molecules. Because of this, their influence on chemical processes is often low, but can definitely not be ignored, and even becomes important in cases of molecules with large contact surfaces. Hierarchically assembled dinuclear titanium(IV) helicates represent a rare example in which the direct observation of London dispersion forces is possible in solution even in the presence of strong cohesive solvent effects. Hereby, the dispersion forces do not unlimitedly support the formation of the dimeric complexes. Although they have some favorable enthalpic contribution to the dimerization of the monomeric complex units, large flexible…
bbFISH-ing in the sonication fluid
2019
Abstract By 2030, the annual number of combined total hip and knee arthroplasty is estimated to reach 3.5 to 4 million in the US alone. In the context of a constant increase of the number of primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, an increased risk of complication is expected. Prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent major cause of healthcare expenditure and morbidity. PJI still remain the most common and feared arthroplasty complication. A rapid and correct diagnosis of infection is decisive for a correct therapeutical management. In this setting, the Academic Emergency Hospital Sibiu adopted and implemented, with the beginning of September 2016, a new strategy for the di…
Sonication-Induced Modification of Carbon Nanotubes: Effect on the Rheological and Thermo-Oxidative Behaviour of Polymer-Based Nanocomposites.
2018
The aim of this work is the investigation of the effect of ultrasound treatment on the structural characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the consequent influence that the shortening induced by sonication exerts on the morphology, rheological behaviour and thermo-oxidative resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based nanocomposites. First, CNTs have been subjected to sonication for different time intervals and the performed spectroscopic and morphological analyses reveal that a dramatic decrease of the CNT's original length occurs with increased sonication time. The reduction of the initial length of CNTs strongly affects the nanocomposite rheological behavio…
Lasten ja vanhusten toimijuus : diskurssianalyysi neljän puolueen eduskuntavaaliohjelmista
2021
Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin, miten lapsia ja vanhuksia kuvataan toimijuuden näkökulmasta neljän suurimman puolueen eduskuntavaaliohjelmissa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä hyödynnettiin kriittistä diskurssianalyysiä. Aineistosta oli tunnistettavissa kaksi toimijuuden diskurssia: passiivisen ja aktiivisen toimijuuden diskurssit, joissa molemmissa puhutaan lasten ja vanhusten toimijuudesta erityisesti palvelujärjestelmän kautta. Passiivisen toimijuuden diskurssissa erilaiset yhteiskunnalliset toimijat näyttäytyivät aktiivisina toimijoina lasten ja vanhusten sijaan. Aktiivisen toimijuuden puhe kietoutui palvelujärjestelmään, joka kuvautui keskeiseksi toimijuutta tuottavaksi tekijäksi. Lisäksi lasten toim…
LACTOBACILLI IN SOURDOUGH FERMENTATION: A REVIEW
2007
Sourdough technology is widely used; it is employed in bread making and for the production of cakes. Sourdough is characterized by a complex microbial ecosystem, mainly represented by lactic acid bacteria and yeasts, whose fermentation confers to the resulting bread its characteristic features such as palatability and high sensory quality. Investigation of the microbial composition of sourdough is relevant in order to determine the potential activities of sourdough microorganisms. This review focuses on the role of the most important group of sourdough fermenting bacteria that consists of lactobacilli; species that belong to the Lactobacillus genus are the main responsible of flavor develop…
Preliminary Investigation of Biogenic Amines in Type I Sourdoughs Produced at Home and Bakery Level
2022
During a survey for isolating sourdough lactic acid bacteria (LAB), 20 dough samples produced at the bakery level (BL) or home-made (HM) were collected. An enzyme-based colorimetric method revealed a total biogenic amines (BAs) concentration in the range 41.4–251.8 ppm for six (three BL and three HM) sourdoughs characterised by unpleasant odours. Eight BAs generally investigated in foods were identified and quantified from these six samples by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). Only one HM sample contained almost all analysed BAs. Tryptamine was exclusively detected in HM sourdoughs (0.71–24.1 ppm). Putrescine, tryptamine, …
