The contribution presents and examines, through documentary readings, anti-seismic strategies and practices born with experience and with the relationship with history, selected and consolidated over time, applied in Sicilian construction from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century by architects and master builders after the great earthquakes that hit the island in the modern age.

L’odonimia nissena, come emerge da “Lo Stato della Città di Caltanissetta nel 1731 sotto l’arciprete Giovanni Agostino Riva”, presenta la suddivisione storica in quattro quartieri così come consegnataci ancora nel Novecento nell’omonima canzone di Rosa Balistreri: nel manoscritto si elencano il “Quartieri chiamato delli Zingari”, il “Quartiero di Santo Rocco”, il “Quartiero di San Francesco” e il “Quartiero di Santa Vennira”. Il saggio analizza episodi di criticità strutturali relativi a cupole e campanili della Sicilia del secondo Settecento (chiese Madri di Ragusa, Piazza Armerina e Caltagirone). In particolare verranno esaminati i progetti ex novo e le perizie redatti dall’architetto catanese Francesco Battaglia sulle problematiche relative al comportamento statico di strutture spingenti, come le cupole e le volte, o alte e isolate, come i campanili, di cui l’architetto propone soluzioni finalizzate alla loro fortificazione e sicurezza. It is essential to combine genealogical and collective biographical approaches with network analysis if one wants to take full advantage of the evidence provided by (hereditary) personal names in historical and linguistic onomastic research. The naming practices of rural families and clans from the 18th to the 20th century can bring us much fresh information about their enduring attitudes and values, as well as about other mentalities of everyday life. Personal names were cultural symbols that contained socially shared meanings. Friar-architects carried out important projects in the Valencia area. These monks, who combined architectural with spiritual labors, accomplished works in which they knew how to combine tradition with new architectural tendencies. The church of St. Michael Archangel of Burjassot by Friar Francisco de Santa Bárbara, provides the chance to study this constructive phenomenon in relation to its doorway and twin altarpieces at the crossing.
