The Uses of Analogies in 17th and 18th Century Science

2011

International audience; The object of this research is to look at the extent and nature of the uses of analogy during the first century following the so-called scientific revolution. Using the research tool provided by JSTOR we systematically analyze the uses of “analog” and its cognates (analogies, analogous, etc) in the hilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London(PT) for the period 1665-1780. In addition to giving the possibility of evaluating quantitatively the proportion of papers explicitly using analogies, this approach makes it possible to go beyond the maybe idiosyncratic cases of Descartes, Kepler or Galileo and other much studied giants of the so-called Scientific Rev…

Richard Bradley - étude de quelques illustrations pré-évolutionnistes

2015

Richard Bradley (1688-1732) is an English botanist more particularly known for his books on gardening and exotic plants. He published in 1721 a treatise entitled A Philosophical Account of the Works of Nature, in which he offers the reader a complete and systematic description of the natural world organized in the best way by a benevolent God according to the principle of the Great Chain of Being. He discovers plenty of evidence of a divine order via the use of the microscope and the recent discoveries on plant sexual reproduction. However, a study of some of the illustrations reveals some doubts about the Great Chain of Being, notably regarding the place of man within nature.

Illuminismo e giustizia penale. Il caso della ghigliottina

2011

International audience; A mechanical daughter of the enlightenment, the guillotine remains a frightening symbol of its dialectic. Being one of the most troubling inventions of utilitarian rationalism in modern europe, it meets the expectations of equality, secularism, and humanity of the legal culture of Philosophes. Focusing on the texts and contexts of the institution of this lethal machine in the administration of justice, this article examines the anthropological sense and the political dimension of the recourse to the machine. Is the mechanization of capital punishment a step forward in the humanization of social relations or the entry in the era of technical inhumanity? In this ambigu…

A Bayesian Reconstruction of a Historical Population in Finland, 1647–1850

2020

This article provides a novel method for estimating historical population development. We review the previous literature on historical population time-series estimates and propose a general outline to address the well-known methodological problems. We use a Bayesian hierarchical time-series model that allows us to integrate the parish-level data set and prior population information in a coherent manner. The procedure provides us with model-based posterior intervals for the final population estimates. We demonstrate its applicability by estimating the long-term development of Finlands population from 1647 onward and simultaneously place the country among the very few to have an annual popula…

The castle's Hermitage of Yecla (Region of Murcia) constituted during the 13th to 16th centuries the first parish of the population, hosting a triptych-shaped altarpiece presided over by a tempera painting on wood of Our Lady of Humility or "Virgo Lactans", dated around 1370 and attributed to the painter Barnaba da Modena, which was the titular image of the mentioned temple under the title of Our Lady of the Incarnation, until at the end of the 18th century it changed ownership for the Conception of Our Lady. Terremoto e architettura storica. Palermo e il sisma del 1726.

2015

On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …
