Assessing vermetid reefs as indicators of past sea levels in the Mediterranean
2020
Abstract The endemic Mediterranean reef building vermetid gastropods Dendropoma petraeum complex (Dendropoma spp) and Vermetus triquetrus develop bio-constructions (rims) on rocky shorelines at about Mean Sea Level (MSL) and are therefore commonly used as relative sea-level (RSL) markers. In this study, we use elevations and age data of vermetid reefs to (1) re-assess the vertical uncertainties of these biological RSL indicators, and (2) evaluate the vertical growth rates along a Mediterranean east-west transect, in attempt to explain the differences found in both growth rates and uncertainties. In Israel, Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and laser measurements relative to the …
L'anno 1910 in Russia
2012
1910 is a crucial year for Russian culture – the deaths of Lev Tolstoi, Vera Komissarzhevskaia and Mikhail Vrubel' symbolize a deep crisis. Symbolism discusses its own death, while the movements which will take its place (acmeism, futurism) move the first tentative steps. This volume is the output of the work of an international research team, analyzing the different parallel events that characterized Russian literature, visual arts, theater, music and cinema in 1910, aiming to compose a synoptic table, a map of the complex and intertwined phenomena that laid the foundation for future developments.
Transnational Constructors of Parliamentary Democracy in Swedish and Finnish Constitutional Controversies, 1917–1919
2019
During the First World War, the legitimacy of established polities was challenged everywhere in Europe. Not only the combatant great powers but also smaller states witnessed a resurgence of constitutional disputes and competing ideological conceptualizations of revolution and reform, the will of the people, democracy, and parliamentarism. While these controversies primarily focused on the future of the national polities concerned, historical experiences and discourses accelerated by the war and the Russian Revolution were transnationally interconnected and contributed to discursive transfers between political cultures. Swedish and Finnish socialists were linked by their internationals, libe…
Words and Deeds : Discord between the British Parliament and the Women’s Social and Political Union relating to the First Conciliation Bill of 1910
2021
This article focuses on the question of women’s suffrage in Britain by analyzing the interaction between the House of Commons and the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) - the radical suffrage organization founded in 1903 and led by the famous Pankhursts. Central to this study are parliamentary debates relating to the Parliamentary Franchise (Women) Bill, better known as the first Conciliation Bill in 1910, as well as the writings published in 1910 in WSPU’s periodical, Votes for Women. To give a fresh angle to existing research on the question of female franchise, the parliamentary aspect is emphasized and connected to the suffragettes, the members of the WSPU. The kind of influence …
Tres artistas en el exilio: Max Aub, Félix Candela y Josep Renau
2020
Three artists in exile focuses on the historical diaspora provoked by the Spanish civil war (1936- 1939), and how it influenced three prominent figures of the cultural scene of that period: the writer and typographer Max Aub Mohrenwitz (Paris, 1903-Ciudad de Mexico, 1972); the architect Félix Candela Outeriño (Madrid, 1910-Raleigh, US, 1977); and the artist Josep Renau Berenguer (Valencia, 1907-Berlín, 1982). While they were…
