Reconciling open charm production at the Fermilab Tevatron with QCD

We study the inclusive hadrodroduction of D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, and D_s^+ mesons at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) fitted to e^+e^- annihilation data from CERN LEP1. Working in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, we resum the large logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and, at the same time, retain the full dependence on the charm-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. In this way, the cross section distributions in transverse momentum recently measured by the CDF Collaboration in run II at the Fermilab Tevatron are described within errors.

Timing and patterns of the ENSO signal in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from normalized difference vegetation index data.

Abstract A more complete picture of the timing and patterns of the ENSO signal during the seasonal cycle for the whole of Africa over the three last decades is provided using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Indeed, NDVI has a higher spatial resolution and is more frequently updated than in situ climate databases, and highlights the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics as a combined result of ENSO on rainfall, solar radiation, and temperature. The month-by-month NDVI–Niño-3.4 correlation patterns evolve as follows. En centrant l’analyse sur une étape du parcours de Michel Bernard, durant laquelle il intervient à l’École normale supérieure d’Éducation physique, notre propos vise à reconsidérer l’apport de cet acteur comme étant révélateur d’une mutation théorique fondamentale dans ce secteur professionnel, à travers l’introduction des sciences humaines. La perspective adoptée sous l’angle d’une biographie herméneutique permet de rendre compte, à travers la singularité du personnage, des évolutions et des tensions collectives qui se dessinent autour des représentations du corps et des velléités d’émancipation qui caractérisent les années précédant mai 1968.
