Józef Wacław Dąbrowski (1797–1862). Wołynianin w armii Królestwa Polskiego

2021

2500 Years of European Climate Variability and Human Susceptibility

2011

Climate variations influenced the agricultural productivity, health risk, and conflict level of preindustrial societies. Discrimination between environmental and anthropogenic impacts on past civilizations, however, remains difficult because of the paucity of high-resolution paleoclimatic evidence. We present tree ring-based reconstructions of central European summer precipitation and temperature variability over the past 2500 years. Recent warming is unprecedented, but modern hydroclimatic variations may have at times been exceeded in magnitude and duration. Wet and warm summers occurred during periods of Roman and medieval prosperity. Increased climate variability from similar to 250 to 6…

Historical ethnopharmacology of the herbalists from Krummhübel in the Sudety Mountains (seventeenth to nineteenth century), Silesia

2018

Background Krummhübel (after 1945, Karpacz) in the Sudety Mountains (now SW Poland) was called “the village of pharmacists”. At the end of the seventeenth century, there were 57 households, of which about 40 were inhabited by herbalists. Krummhübel herbalists were the first in the Sudety region who applied medicinal mixtures for the treatment of various diseases (using, among others, plants, oils, minerals and even viper venom) in contrast to previous herbalists who only indicated the use of individual plant species for specific diseases. Riesengebirge (in Polish Karkonosze) potions were sold in Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Russia, and some of them could even be purchased in Scan…

Contributions to the history of psychology: CXIX. The Spanish Neurohistological School's legacy: Cajal and Lorente de Nó.

2003

Santiago Ramón y Cajal made his mark in the history of science as a brilliant researcher of the histology of the nervous system. His bold efforts and the international recognition he received during his lifetime played an important role in the consolidation of the Spanish Neurohistological School which is composed of a large number of eminent disciples. Amongst these, and of outstanding repute, is Rafael Lorente de Nó whose research had a significant influence on the work of Canadian psychologist Donald O. Hebb and, consequently, on the development of neurophysiological theory. This paper analyses some of the contributions of Cajal and his disciple Lorente de Nó which formed the anatomical…

Ajatuksella ja ahkeruudella kolmen suvun vaiheista neljältä vuosisadalta

2018

Kirja-arvio teoksesta Immonen, Perttu: Suomen rahvaan historia. Kolmen suvun elämää keskiajalta 1800-luvulle. Atena Kustannus Oy, 2017. 639 sivua. ISBN 978- 952-300-335-4. Perttu Immonen yhdistää teoksessaan mielenkiintoisesti ja elävästi mikro- ja makrohistorian varhaismodernin ajan Suomessa. Hän seuraa kronologisesti kolmen eri seutukunnan: LänsiSuomen Sastamalan, Itä-Suomen Rantasalmen ja Pohjanmaan Kokkolan tapahtumia. Poikkeuksellisen ankarien aikojen kuvauksesta muodostuu moniulotteinen ja alueiden erilaisia kohtaloita tarkasteleva analyysi. nonPeerReviewed

Donne altrove. Viaggi, scrittura periodica e identità nell'Ottocento inglese

2015

The book focuses on the usage and publication of travelogues by 19th century women travellers to the colonies of the Empire as tools for spreading a new female identity based on courage, strenght, adventurous attitudes, in brief, based on all those features on which male identity had governed the economic, social, political and cultural areas, and last but not least, suffocated the so called 'fragile' gender. the travelogue, that is the writing of a a non fictional travel experience by women, to and in place such as the colonies, considered as the uncivilised and dangerous side of the Empire gave women the possibility to develop and perform their own selves as authoritative, mobile and powe…
