History and services of culture collections.
2003
Microbial culture collections aim at collecting, maintaining and distributing microbial strains among microbiologists, and are considered to be a means to preserve microbial diversity ex situ. This article reviews the early history of culture collections, which were first set up in the late nineteenth century, with the introduction of pure culture techniques. It also describes the international connections between culture collections, which led to the foundation of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) and the International Congress of Culture Collections (ICCC). An overview of the Spanish Type Culture Collection (CECT) is included, as well as a description of the services tha…
The Hammerhead Ribozyme: A Long History for a Short RNA
2017
Small nucleolytic ribozymes are a family of naturally occurring RNA motifs that catalyse a self-transesterification reaction in a highly sequence-specific manner. The hammerhead ribozyme was the first reported and the most extensively studied member of this family. However, and despite intense biochemical and structural research for three decades since its discovery, the history of this model ribozyme seems to be far from finished. The hammerhead ribozyme has been regarded as a biological oddity typical of small circular RNA pathogens of plants. More recently, numerous and new variations of this ribozyme have been found to inhabit the genomes of organisms from all life kingdoms, although th…
La Méthode como hermenéutica musical Homenaje a Edgar Morin por su 100º cumpleaños
2021
The present work addresses the principles and properties of the complex thought formulated by the French thinker Edgar Morin and the way in which he was able me to articulate his conception of organizational complexity with one of the most important theories of musical analysis, which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century: the schenkerian analysis. It is a review and extension of a few pages of my doctoral thesis, which are intended to pay tribute to who has been, in addition to my teacher, Honorary President of Itamar since its first issue. His teachings and support has always been the engine for my quest for musical organization. On July 21, 2021, Morin celebrated his 100th birthda…
A return to humane medicine: Osler's legacy.
2017
Sir William Osler is celebrated today not only for his contributions to the advancement of medical education, but also for the humanism he brought to the practice of medicine. He was a doctor whose bedside skills and manners were emulated, and can legitimately be called an infectious diseases specialist. Nonetheless, he was also a humanist in the broader sense of the term, a student of human affairs and human nature, who emphasised compassion for the individual. To what extent, if any, are today's challenges influenced by departures from the paradigms created by Osler? In this paper we sought to ascertain whether such a tradition is still relevant to current practice and may foster a new pe…
Operāciju māsas profesijas attīstības vēsture 20. gadsimta beigās Latvijā
2017
Oksana Sadigova izstrādāja bakalaura darbu par tēmu “Operāciju māsas profesijas attīstības vēsturi 20. gs beigās Latvijā” Latvijas Universitātes Medicīnas fakultātē, laika posmā no 2017. gada janvāra līdz 2017. gada maijam. Darba mērķis bija izpētīt un apkopot pieejamos datus par operāciju māsas attīstības vēsturi 20. gadsimta beigā Latvijā. Sakarā ar izvirzīto darba mērķi tika izvirzīti šādi uzdevumi: 1.Apkopot informāciju par operāciju māsas profesijas attīstību 20. gs. beigās, laikaposmā no 1970. līdz 2000. Gadam.
2006
The Estación de Patología Vegetal de Burjassot (Valencia), created in 1924, carried out important activities related to the control of pests, in varied fronts as original research, adaptation of techniques, and popularization. The biological control was highly practiced, and it was centered on orange pests. The chemical control of pests was also developed in this center.
Characterization of foxing stains in early twentieth century photographic and paper materials
2016
The subject of this present work is a group of nine historical pictures shot in Palermo by the Sicilian photographer E. Interguglielmi in 1912. They are nine matte-collodion prints mounted on the original cardboard supports and all of them show foxing stains affecting the paper surface. In order to characterise the chemical composition of the supports and investigate foxing spots, non-destructive and micro-destructive analysis were carried out. X-rays fluorescence (XRF) analysis was used to characterise the elemental composition of all the mounting boards, allowing a comparison between the foxing spots and non-affected areas. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy was used to investigate the …
Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis--late-infantile or Jansky-Bielschowsky type--revisited.
1996
Among the now eight genetic types of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (NCL), CLN1 to CLN8, CLN2 is considered classic late-infantile NCL. It was originally described by Janský in a family of eight children with four of them affected [Janský J (1908) Sborn Lek 13:165-196] and, subsequently, by Bielschowsky in a family of three children each of whom was affected, and, hence, termed Janský-Bielschowsky type of NCL. Earlier, archival studies of Bielschowsky's original post-mortem tissue blocks had documented accumulation of autofluorescent lipopigments with a curvilinear ultrastructure. In a subsequent study, described here, immunohistochemical absence of the CLN2-related lysosomal enzyme tripept…
Experiences of First Insulin-Treated Patients (1922-1923).
2019
Background Historical description of first insulin trials just after its discovery. Areas of uncertainty The review includes first initiatives of insulin treatment. The probability of other trials, not reported to the Insulin Committee of the University of Toronto and conducted in the years 1922 and 1923, is quite low. Data sources (1) Archival Collections, University of Toronto: Insulin Discovery and Early Developments of Insulin (University of Toronto Libraries digital special collection, with a particular section entitled "From a Patient's Point of View" containing letters, patient charts, newspaper clippings, and photographs).
