Gut-adipose tissue axis in hepatic fat accumulation in humans

2014

Recent evidence suggests that in animals gut microbiota composition (GMC) affects the onset and progression of hepatic fat accumulation. The aim of this study was to investigate in humans whether subjects with high hepatic fat content (HHFC) differ in their GMC from those with low hepatic fat content (LHFC), and whether these differences are associated with body composition, biomarkers and abdominal adipose tissue inflammation.Hepatic fat content (HFC) was measured using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS). Fecal GMC was profiled by 16S rRNA fluorescence in situ hybridization and flow cytometry. Adipose tissue gene expression was analyzed using Affymetrix microarrays and quant…

Physical activity, heart rate variability-based stress and recovery, and subjective stress during a 9-month study period.

2017

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between physical activity (PA) and objective heart rate variability (HRV)-based stress and recovery with subjective stress in a longitudinal setting. Working-age participants (n = 221; 185 women, 36 men) were overweight (body mass index, 25.3–40.1 kg/m2) and psychologically distressed (≥3/12 points on the General Health Questionnaire). Objective stress and recovery were based on HRV recordings over 1–3 work days. Subjective stress was assessed with the Perceived Stress Scale and PA level with a questionnaire. Data were collected at three time points: baseline, 10 weeks post intervention, and at the 36-week follow-up. We adopted a late…

Individual music therapy for depression: randomised controlled trial

2011

BackgroundMusic therapy has previously been found to be effective in the treatment of depression but the studies have been methodologically insufficient and lacking in clarity about the clinical model employed.AimsTo determine the efficacy of music therapy added to standard care compared with standard care only in the treatment of depression among working-age people.MethodParticipants (n= 79) with an ICD–10 diagnosis of depression were randomised to receive individual music therapy plus standard care (20 bi-weekly sessions) or standard care only, and followed up at baseline, at 3 months (after intervention) and at 6 months. Clinical measures included depression, anxiety, general functioning…

Pulmonary embolism location is associated with the co-existence of the deep venous thrombosis.

2019

Multiple studies have shown that in approximately half of individuals with pulmonary embolism (PE), the deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is not evident at the moment of PE diagnosis. The underlying factors and the origin of PE in these patients are not completely understood: missed DVT, embolization of DVT in its entirety, or de-novo PE being possible explanations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in PE patient with or without co-existing DVT. Sixty-three consecutive PE patients were included. Whole leg bilateral Doppler compression ultrasound was performed to all patients. The PE location and extension, C-reactive protein, platelet count, hemostatic markers FV, FVIII, FXII…

The role of obesity and physical activity in non-specific and radiating low back pain: The Young Finns study

2013

Objective To study the effects of obesity, physical activity, and change in physical activity on the incidence of low back pain and explore whether obesity modifies the effects of physical activity. Methods As part of the ongoing Young Finns Study, 1224 subjects aged 24–39 years free from low back pain during the preceding 12 months at baseline in 2001 were included. Obesity was defined based on the body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, and physical activity was assessed by the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) index in 2001 and 2007. Results Abdominal obesity, defined by an increased waist circumference, was associated with an increased incidence of radiating low back pain (adjus…

Trajectories of Blood Pressure Elevation Preceding Hypertension Onset: An Analysis of the Framingham Heart Study Original Cohort

2018

Importance Given that hypertension remains a leading risk factor for chronic disease globally, there are substantial ongoing efforts to define the optimal range of blood pressure (BP). Objective To identify a common threshold level above which BP rise tends to accelerate in progression toward hypertension. Design, Setting, and Participants This longitudinal, community-based epidemiological cohort study of adults enrolled in Framingham, Massachusetts, included 1252 participants (mean [SD] age, 35.3 [2.7] years) from the Framingham Original Cohort, of whom 790 (63.1%) were women. Each participant contributed up to 28 serial examinations of standardized resting BP measurements between 1948 and…

Development of a Food-Based Diet Quality Score from a Short FFQ and Associations with Obesity Measures, Eating Styles and Nutrient Intakes in Finnish…

2019

We constructed a food-based diet quality score (DQS) and examined its association with obesity measures, eating styles and nutrient intakes. Participants were 3592 individuals (764 dizygotic [DZ] and 430 monozygotic [MZ] twin pairs) from the FinnTwin16 study. The DQS (0&ndash

Does baseline leisure-time physical activity level predict future depressive symptoms or physical activity among depressive patients? Findings from a…

2021

Objectives The aims of this study were to investigate whether baseline leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) is associated with future recovery from depression among patients with a depression diagnosis and whether baseline LTPA is associated with total physical activity after five years of follow-up. Methods A total of 258 patients aged >= 35 years with clinically confirmed depression at baseline participated. The study was conducted between 2008 and 2016 in municipalities within the Central Finland Hospital District. Depressive symptoms (DS) were determined with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) with a cutoff score >= 10, and depression diagnoses were confirmed by the Mini-International…

Influence of early life risk factors and lifestyle on systemic vascular resistance in later adulthood : the cardiovascular risk in young Finns study

2021

Purpose: There are limited data available concerning the effects of lifetime risk factors and lifestyle on systemic hemodynamics, especially on systemic vascular resistance. The purpose of the study was to evaluate how lifetime cardiovascular risk factors (body mass index (BMI), high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose) and lifestyle factors (vegetable consumption, fruit consumption, smoking and physical activity) predict systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) and cardiac index (CI) assessed in adulthood. Materials and Methods: Our study cohort comprised 1635 subjects of the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study followed …

Recommendations on the diagnosis and management of Niemann-Pick disease type C

2009

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) is a lysosomal storage disease in which impaired intracellular lipid trafficking leads to excess storage of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids in the brain and other tissues. it is characterized clinically by a variety of progressive, disabling neurological symptoms including clumsiness, limb and gait ataxia, dysarthria, dysphagia and cognitive deterioration (dementia). Until recently, there has been no disease-modifying therapy available for NP-C, with treatment limited to supportive measures. In most countries, NP-C is managed through specialist centers, with non-specialist support provided locally. However, effective patient Support is hampered by the a…
