Discovery of a soft X-ray 8 mHz QPO from the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J00291+5934

2016

In this paper, we report on the analysis of the peculiar X-ray variability displayed by the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 in a 80 ks-long joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observation performed during the source outburst in 2015. The light curve of the source was characterized by a flaring-like behavior, with typical rise and decay time scales of ~120 s. The flares are accompanied by a remarkable spectral variability, with the X-ray emission being generally softer at the peak of the flares. A strong quasi periodic oscillation (QPO) is detected at ~8 mHz in the power spectrum of the source and clearly associated with the flaring-like behavior. This feature has the strongest po…

New insights on the puzzling LMXB 1RXS J180408.9-342058: the intermediate state, the clocked type-I X-ray bursts and much more

2019

1RXS J180408.9--342058 is a low mass X-ray binary hosting a neutron star, which shows X-ray activity at very different mass-accretion regimes, from very faint to almost the Eddington luminosity. In this work, we present a comprehensive X-ray study of this source using data from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, NuSTAR and INTEGRAL/JEM-X. In order to follow the spectral evolution, we analysed the 2015 outburst using Swift data and three Nustar observations. Besides the canonical hard and soft spectral states, we identified the rarely observed intermediate state. This was witnessed by the appeareance of the accretion disk emission in the spectrum (at $kT_{\rm disk}$ $\sim$0.7 keV) and the s…

Altered neural responses to social fairness in bipolar disorder

2020

Highlights • Bipolar disorder is characterized by impaired processing of social fairness. • BD patients exhibit increased rejection of moderate unfairness in Ultimatum Game. • BD patients display decreased response to moderate unfairness in anterior insula. • BD patients deactivate posterior and middle insula in response to unfairness. • Trait impulsivity positively correlated with deactivations in posterior insula.

Transcriptomic metaanalyses of autistic brains reveals shared gene expression and biological pathway abnormalities with cancer

2019

Este es el artículo que se ha publicado de forma definitiva en: https://molecularautism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13229-019-0262-8 En este artículo también participa Joan Climent, Vera Pancaldi, Lourdes Fañanás, Celso Arango, Mara Parellada, Anaïs Baudot, Daniel Vogt, John L. Rubenstein, Alfonso Valencia y Rafael Tabarés-Seisdedos. Background: Epidemiological and clinical evidence points to cancer as a comorbidity in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A significant overlap of genes and biological processes between both diseases has also been reported. Methods: Here, for the first time, we compared the gene expression profiles of ASD frontal cortex tissues and 22 cancer t…

Impaired circadian heart rate variability in Parkinson’s disease: a time-domain analysis in ambulatory setting

2020

Abstract Background Heart rate variability (HRV) decreases in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and it can be considered a marker for cardiovascular dysautonomia. The purpose of this pilot study is to evaluate long-term time-domain analysis of HRV of PD patients and compare the results with those of matched healthy individuals. Methods Idiopathic PD patients without comorbidity impairing HRV, and age-matched healthy individuals were recruited in a pilot study. A long-term time domain analysis of HRV using 24-h ambulatory ECG was performed. Results Overall, 18 PD patients fulfilling inclusion criteria completed the evaluation (mean age was 55.6 ± 8.8, disease duration: 5.0 ± 4.7). Mean SCOPA-AUT scor…

Lipofuscin Hypothesis of Alzheimer’s Disease

2011

The primary culprit responsible for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains unknown. Aβ protein has been identified as the main component of amyloid of senile plaques, the hallmark lesion of AD, but it is not definitively established whether the formation of extracellular Aβ deposits is the absolute harbinger of the series of pathological events that hit the brain in the course of sporadic AD. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to a relatively overlooked age-related product, lipofuscin, and advance the hypothesis that its release into the extracellular space following the death of neurons may substantially contribute to the formation of senile plaques. The presence of intraneuronal Aβ, sim…

Space-VLBI phase-reference mapping and astrometry

2001

We present 5 GHz space-VLBI observations of the quasar pair B1342+662/B1342+663 that demonstrate the feasibility of phase-reference techniques using an antenna in space. The space-based data were taken by the satellite HALCA, of the space-VLBI mission VSOP. From residual (referenced) phases we derive an upper bound of 10 meters to the uncertainty of the spacecraft orbit reconstruction. An analysis of the phase-reference maps of the sources additionally suggests that the above mentioned uncertaintyis likely not larger than 3 meters. With errors of this magnitude, HALCA is a useful tool for astrometric studies of close pairs of radio sources.

What are the consequences of overfishing in West-Africa, and how can sustainable and flourishing fisheries be promoted?

2012

Masteroppgave i økonomi og administrasjon - Universitetet i Agder 2012 Overfishing is a worldwide phenomenon and an issue at global scale. It is a problem that cannot be solved alone by the efforts of a single country, but it requires a substantial amount of efforts from both countries and international organizations to successfully mitigate and eliminate overfishing. How can fisheries promote flourishing and sustainable development in inadequate institutions, and how is it possible to know that fishing activities are just and fair or basic human rights being violated? What are the consequences of overfishing, and who are held responsible? In this thesis, the fisheries partnership agreement…

Skolebygg : påvirkes elevens prestasjoner av skolebyggets utforming?

2011

I ana…
