Geometric Analysis of Type B Aortic Dissections Shows Aortic Remodeling After Intervention Using Multilayer Stents

2020

Recently, multilayer stents for type B aortic dissections (TBAD) have been proposed to decrease false lumen flow, increase and streamline true lumen flow, and retain branch vessel patency. We aimed to provide a protocol with standardized techniques to investigate aortic remodeling of TBAD by multilayer flow modulators (MFM) in static geometric and hemodynamic analyses. Combining existing literature and new insights, a standardized protocol was designed. Using pre- and postoperative CT scans, geometric models were constructed, lumen dimensions were calculated, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were composed, and velocity and pressures were calculated. Sixteen TBAD cases treated with …

Fourier-domain lightfield microscopy: a new paradigm in 3D microscopy

2020

Recently, integral (also known as lightfield or plenoptic) imaging concept has been applied successfully to microscopy. The main advantage of lightfield microscopy when compared with conventional 3D imaging techniques is that it offers the possibility of capturing the 3D information of the sample after a single shot. However, integral microscopy is now facing many challenges, like improving the resolution and depth of field of the reconstructed specimens or the development and optimization of specially-adapted reconstruction algorithms. This contribution is devoted to review a new paradigm in lightfield microscopy, namely, the Fourier-domain integral microscope (FiMic), that improves the ca…

Crowdsourcing Cultural Heritage: From 3D Modeling to the Engagement of Young Generations

2016

Monitoring, digitizing and archiving museum artworks represent an important socio-cultural accomplishment and an overcoming in digital preservation today. Cultural heritage is constantly under threat of terrorist attacks and natural disaster. The high costs related to documentation task have prevented a constantly and massive survey activity. The low cost 3D image based acquisition and elaboration techniques of an object, allow to carry out a 3D photorealistic model in a short time. Therefore, a lot of museum adopted these techniques for the artworks archiving. Crowdsourcing activities can significantly speed up survey and elaboration procedures. If, on the one hand, these initiatives can h…

A direct comparison of 2D versus 3D diffusion analysis at nanowire electrodes: A finite element analysis and experimental study

2022

In electroanalysis, the benefits accrued by miniaturisation are a key driver in sensor development. Finite element simulations of electrochemical processes occurring at ultramicro- and nano-electrodes are used to provide key insight into experimental design in relation to diffusion profiles and expected currents. The most commonly used method, the diffusion domain approach (DDA) offers a means of reducing a three dimensional design to two dimensions to ease computational demands. However, the DDA approach can be limited when using basic assumptions which can be incorrect, for example that all electrodes in an array are equivalent. Consequently, to get a more realistic view of molecular diff…

Low cost system for visualization and exhibition of pottery finds in archeological museums

2015

The objective of this project is to build a low-cost system for surveying, modeling, prototyping and interactive visualizing aimed at the enhancement of islamic pottery finds of X – XI centuries. The system will allow various applications: the creation of systems for displaying artifacts from the museum alongside the exhibition, the virtual view of restorations from fragments, including AR and VR, the physical reconstruction of the original form using 3D printer to show the pieces in their entirety, as well as the construction of interactive virtual archives to be made available to scholars and visitors.

The Human Biodiversity in the Middle of the Mediterranean. Study of native and settlers populations on the Sicilian context

2020

Dental measurements and Bolton index reliability and accuracy obtained from 2D digital, 3D segmented CBCT, and 3d intraoral laser scanner

2017

Background To compare the reliability and accuracy of direct and indirect dental measurements derived from two types of 3D virtual models: generated by intraoral laser scanning (ILS) and segmented cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), comparing these with a 2D digital model. Material and methods One hundred patients were selected. All patients' records included initial plaster models, an intraoral scan and a CBCT. Patients´ dental arches were scanned with the iTero® intraoral scanner while the CBCTs were segmented to create three-dimensional models. To obtain 2D digital models, plaster models were scanned using a conventional 2D scanner. When digital models had been obtained using these thr…

Trending topics in Spanish Palaeontology: Contributions from the XI Encuentro de Jóvenes Investigadores

2020

The present volume represents a series of synthetic works presented at the “XI Encuentro de Jóvenes Investigadores en Paleontología”, which took place in Atarfe (Granada, Spain) on April 2013. During this meeting, more than thirty contributions were presented, offering a representative sample of the palaeontological state-of-the-art research currently developed in Spain. A small selection of these contributions is here presented, highlighting than most of them are first-authored by early-stage Spanish researcher who attended the aforementioned meeting. As stated above, our planet has evolved since its origin, in a similar wat that Palaeontology has evolved during the las decades. This evolu…

A 3D reworking of the urban transformations of Palermo in recent history for a hypothesis of a "City Museum" based on digital visualizations

2021

The objective that drives this research is given by a multitude of information which, in addition to the contribution of technology, allows us to study, analyze, verify and remodel the sites, monuments and evolutions of the city through graphic processes of perspective restitution that start from the analysis of historical photos. The drawing methods, the digital graphic rendering and through the aid of geometric techniques, contribute to the reconstruction of projects and architectures that are now lost, this is possible thanks to the methods of perspective, axonometry and three-dimensional restitution. This remarkable photographic heritage belonging to Palermo, but also to any other city …

Simulation of skin reflectance images using 3D tissue modeling and multispectral Monte Carlo light propagation.

2008

In this work we propose a method to simulate the expected, i.e. seen by a camera, multispectral reflectance images of a large skin surface area by combining Monte Carlo light propagation model and realistic tissue modeling based on three dimensional data acquisition of human body areas. In particular, we aim to simulate more accurately light transport in biological tissue by taking into account the geometrical topography of the skin surface, the structure and optical properties of the skin layers, and the subcutaneous veins in presence. We describe our computation method in detail and present simulated reflectance images results.
