Privo di ragionevole giustificazione, incongruo e inutile: censurato dalla Consulta il divieto di cuocere cibi previsto per i detenuti sottoposti al …

2019

Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional art. 41-bis, paragraph 2-quater, lett. f), ord. pen., where requires the adoption of all the necessary measures to prevent detainees, under differential rule system, from cooking food. Based on the principles set out in articles 3 and 27 of the Constitution, the decision is increasingly important as it goes beyond the relevance of the specifically addressed issue: especially as it recognizes that even those who are restricted, according to art. 41-bis ord. pen., shall keep access to “small acts of daily life”, considered particularly precious as they represent the “last residues within which individual freedom can expand”.

Associazioni ‘ndranghetiste di nuovo insediamento e problemi applicativi dell’art. 416 bis c.p.

2016

Disturbing Weight Cutting Behaviors in Young Combat Sports Athletes: A Cause for Concern

2022

Problematic weight cutting behaviors in combat sports have been addressed in the scientific literature since the 1930s (1). Indeed, given the available evidence it may be the case that making weight/weight cycling [i.e., rapid weight loss (RWL) prior to weigh-in followed by rapid weight gain prior to competition] has been practiced in combat sports since weight divisions have been introduced. These practices have led to several fatalities (2), which occurred as a consequence of making weight rather than any sports-related injury. Unfortunately, RWL-related deaths still persist into recent times (3). Existing literature has detailed patterns of weight cycling (e.g., methods, magnitudes, freq…

Beneficence and equity: how the covid-19 pandemic exposed our weaknesses in Italy

2020

How did Italy face the issue of allocating beds in Intensive Care Units and ventilators during the COVID-19 outbreak? At the beginning of the epidemic, the Italian Society of Anesthesia Analgesia Resuscitation and Intensive Care issued recommendations that sparked a heated debate. Later, the National Bioethics Committee, the ethical advisory board of the Government, has issued a document, which recognizes that the only admissible criterion to employ in a "pandemic emergency triage" is a clinical criterion. The document actually doesn’t address some core ethical issues, leaving many unanswered questions.

Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in complications of thoracic aortic aneurysm

2014

Objectve: Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases involved in extracellular matrix remodelling, associated with both physiopatological processes of several human tissues and systems, such as vascular system. It is well known their involvement in mediating both beneficial and pathological aorta effects, such as abdominal orta aneurysms and its complcations. On the contrary, unclear data exist about their role in the pathophysiology of sporadic thoracic aneurysm (TAA) and its complications. Thus, the aim of this study was to nalyse the role of MMPs in TAA complications, i.e. rupture and dissection. Methods: Aortic specimens obtained from 73 patients (51 men and 22 women, age 61.7 years) a…

Ketogenic diet, physical activity, and hypertension—a narrative review

2021

Several studies link cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with unhealthy lifestyles (unhealthy dietary habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, and low levels of physical activity). Therefore, the strong need for CVD prevention may be pursued through an improved control of CVD risk factors (impaired lipid and glycemic profiles, high blood pressure, and obesity), which is achievable through an overall intervention aimed to favor a healthy lifestyle. Focusing on diet, different recommendations emphasize the need to increase or avoid consumption of entire classes of food, with only partly known and only partly foreseeable consequences on the overall level of health. In recent years, the ketogenic diet (…

Intraoperative cholangiography during laparoscopic cholecystectomy: What role?

2012

Aim: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has increased the number of iatrogenic lesion of the biliary tree. In this study, we evaluate the role of intra-operative cholangiography in prevention of biliary tree iatrogenic lesions and early identification of choledocolithiasis, during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Material of study: 169 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, were evaluated by means of intra-operative cholangiography. Patients were divided into two groups basing on the risk to develop biliary tree lithiasis. Discussion: Patients with a higher risk of postoperative complications effectively showed cholangiographic anomalies, including duct stones, dilations, anatomical va…
