The average element order and the number of conjugacy classes of finite groups

Abstract Let o ( G ) be the average order of the elements of G, where G is a finite group. We show that there is no polynomial lower bound for o ( G ) in terms of o ( N ) , where N ⊴ G , even when G is a prime-power order group and N is abelian. This gives a negative answer to a question of A. Jaikin-Zapirain.

Sharp capacity estimates for annuli in weighted R^n and in metric spaces

We obtain estimates for the nonlinear variational capacity of annuli in weighted R^n and in metric spaces. We introduce four different (pointwise) exponent sets, show that they all play fundamental roles for capacity estimates, and also demonstrate that whether an end point of an exponent set is attained or not is important. As a consequence of our estimates we obtain, for instance, criteria for points to have zero (resp. positive) capacity. Our discussion holds in rather general metric spaces, including Carnot groups and many manifolds, but it is just as relevant on weighted R^n. Multicenter clinical trial of ultrasonic circular cyclo coagulation in patients with open-angle glaucoma: One year results

International audience; Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Ultrasonic Circular Cyclo Coagulation (UC3) procedure with one year of follow-up. Methods: Prospective non comparative interventional clinical study performed in 9 French glaucoma centers. Fifty-two eyes of 52 patients with open-angle glaucoma, intraocular pressure (IOP) > 21 mmHg, an average of 1.7 failed previous surgeries and an average of 3.7 hypotensive medications were insonified with a therapy probe comprising 6 piezoelectric transducers. Orlando Furioso dalla specola del costrutto causativo

Analisi e riflessioni sulle ricorrenze del costrutto causativo nell'Orlando Furioso che si rivela tratto saliente della lingua e dell'espressione dell'opera. Il poema di Ariosto pullula naturalmente di attori che, osservati dalla specola del costrutto causativo, si qualificano appunto come né sovrumani né subumani. Attori siffatti ne sono i protagonisti. Le loro vicissitudini costituiscono il tema dell’opera e ne sostanziano la trama. Che il costrutto causativo sia tanto frequente nel Furioso non è dunque un accidente e il dato è a questo punto comprensibile, perché integrato in un sistema. Il costrutto causativo è nel cuore del processo narrativo, ne è un motore.
