Children's expectancy beliefs and subjective task values through two years of school-based program and associated links to physical education enjoyme…

2016

Purpose: The present study examined the patterns of children's expectancy beliefs and subjective task values through the Physical Activity as Civil Skill Program and associated links to physical education enjoyment and total physical activity. Methods: The sample comprised 401 children aged 9–13 years from 3 small towns located in North-East Finland. All children received school-based activities across 2-year program from Grades 5 to 7. The present data were collected using questionnaires across 3 measurement phases during 2012–2014. Results: The levels of expectancy beliefs and subjective task values indicated to be relatively high and the development was stable through the program, especi…

Identification and evaluation of antimicrobial resistance of enterococci isolated from raw ewes’ and cows’ milk collected in western Sicily: a prelim…

2019

The present work was carried out to investigate the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) of enterococci isolated from raw ewes’ and cows’ milk. The samples were collected from eighteen semi-extensive dairy sheep and cow farms throughout western Sicily. Plate counts, carried out on Rapid Enterococcus Agar commonly used to detect food enterococci, revealed a maximal enterococcal concentration of approximately 4.58 Log Colony Forming Unit (CFU)/mL. Colonies were isolated and differentiated based on genetic analysis by Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR. Thirty-eight different strains were identified. Analysis by a species-specific multiplex PCR assay grouped the strains into three Enteroc…

The immunological implications of the new Vitamin D metabolism

2018

Vitamin D is actually a neurohormone whose pleiotropic activities encompass regulation of calcium-phosphate metabolism, cell proliferation and immunomodulation. Starting from a cutaneous compound, 2 hydroxylation steps are required to produce the active form of vitamin D3, named calcitriol [1, 25-(OH)2-cholecalciferol]. The second hydroxylation step may occur at different tis- sues and cell types, including kidney, lung, prostate, brain, immune cells and placenta. Based on the advancing knowledge of Cytochrome P450 functions, a new conception of Vitamin D metabolism emerged. It implies that, depending on the site where the second hydroxylation step occurs, the active hormone can act as a ca…

Association of vitamin D serum levels and its common genetic determinants, with severity of liver fibrosis in genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C patients.

2013

Background and aims: Lower 25-Hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) serum lev- els have been associated with the severity of liver fibrosis in genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C patients (G1CHC). In addition, a recent genome-wide study identified genetic variants (rs12785878, near dehydrocholesterol reduc- tase, DHCR7; rs10741657, near CYP2R1; and rs7041, near vitamin D binding protein, GC) affecting 25(OH)D serum levels in healthy populations. We aimed to assess the association between vitamin D serum levels and its genetic determinants, with the severity of liver fibrosis. Material and methods: Two hundred sixty patients with biopsy-proven G1CHC were consecutively evaluated. The 25(OH)D serum levels wer…

A time-course investigation of vitamin A levels and drug metabolizing enzyme activities in rats following a single treatment with prototypic polychlo…

1987

Xenobiotics previously characterized as selective inducers of drug-metabolizing enzymes were chosen to probe possible relationships between enzyme induction and vitamin A metabolism. Liver, kidney and serum retinol and retinyl palmitate levels were investigated in male Sprague--Dawley rats receiving a single i.p. injection of the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl or 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (300 mumol/kg) or 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (DDT) (150 mumol/kg). While 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, a weak or non-inducer, and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexaclorobiphenyl and DDT, phenobarbital-type inducers of cytochrome…

Comparison of distance covered in paddle in the serve team according to performance level

2013

Although paddle is the second most practiced sport in Spain, the scientific knowledge about the players' work-load is still very low. The serve is a critical situation because the team has the opportunity to start the point attacking by approaching the net straight after the serve. However, the distance covered by the serve team still has not been studied in padel. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the distance covered by the serve team according performance level. It was hypothesized that the server would cover more distance than his partner due to the approach to the net after the serve. Moreover, it also was hypothesized that the difference between serve and partner would be greater…

Obtaining and Characterisation of Starch-Based Edible Films Incorporating Honey, Propolis and Bee Bread

2019

Abstract This research investigates the physical-chemical, sensorial and mechanical characteristics of starch-based edible films incorporating three types of bee hive products: honey, propolis and bee bread, in concentrations varying from 1% to 3%, reported to starch. The results indicates an increasing of films moisture, water activity, ash content and acidity, in the order: honey<propolis<bee bread, all values increasing with the increasing of hive products percentage into the control film; aw is remaining at very low values, under 0.4. Sensorial analysis indicated honey as the better suited for improving taste and flavour and bee bread for increasing colour intensity of the films; …
