Numerical modelling of the linear friction welding process

2010

Linear friction welding (LFW) is a solid-state joining process applied to non-axisymmetric components. LFW involves joining of materials through the relative reciprocating motion of two components under an axial force. In such process the heat source is given by the frictional forces work decaying into heat determining a local softening of the material and proper bonding conditions due to both the temperature increase and the local pressure of the two edges to be welded. In the present work the authors present a numerical model of the linear friction welding process of AISI 1045 parts. The numerical model allowed to highlight the process mechanics and the physical conditions which must be r…

Selectivity in Probabilistic Causality: Drawing Arrows from Inputs to Stochastic Outputs

2011

Given a set of several inputs into a system (e.g., independent variables characterizing stimuli) and a set of several stochastically non-independent outputs (e.g., random variables describing different aspects of responses), how can one determine, for each of the outputs, which of the inputs it is influenced by? The problem has applications ranging from modeling pairwise comparisons to reconstructing mental processing architectures to conjoint testing. A necessary and sufficient condition for a given pattern of selective influences is provided by the Joint Distribution Criterion, according to which the problem of "what influences what" is equivalent to that of the existence of a joint distr…

CLEAR: Covariant LEAst-Square Refitting with Applications to Image Restoration

2017

International audience; In this paper, we propose a new framework to remove parts of the systematic errors affecting popular restoration algorithms, with a special focus for image processing tasks. Generalizing ideas that emerged for $\ell_1$ regularization, we develop an approach re-fitting the results of standard methods towards the input data. Total variation regularizations and non-local means are special cases of interest. We identify important covariant information that should be preserved by the re-fitting method, and emphasize the importance of preserving the Jacobian (w.r.t. the observed signal) of the original estimator. Then, we provide an approach that has a ``twicing'' flavor a…

Order-distance and other metric-like functions on jointly distributed random variables

2013

We construct a class of real-valued nonnegative binary functions on a set of jointly distributed random variables, which satisfy the triangle inequality and vanish at identical arguments (pseudo-quasi-metrics). These functions are useful in dealing with the problem of selective probabilistic causality encountered in behavioral sciences and in quantum physics. The problem reduces to that of ascertaining the existence of a joint distribution for a set of variables with known distributions of certain subsets of this set. Any violation of the triangle inequality or its consequences by one of our functions when applied to such a set rules out the existence of this joint distribution. We focus on…

Automata and Quantum Computing

2015

Quantum computing is a new model of computation, based on quantum physics. Quantum computers can be exponentially faster than conventional computers for problems such as factoring. Besides full-scale quantum computers, more restricted models such as quantum versions of finite automata have been studied. In this paper, we survey various models of quantum finite automata and their properties. We also provide some open questions and new directions for researchers. Keywords: quantum finite automata, probabilistic finite automata, nondeterminism, bounded error, unbounded error, state complexity, decidability and undecidability, computational complexity

Application of the discussion groups and initial phases of the qfd methodology to the study of Valencian ball trinquetes

2011

Montaner AM, Montaner C, Perez-Soriano P, Carrasco-Embuena V, Llana-Belloch S. Application of the discussion groups and initial phases of the qfd methodology to the study of valencian ball trinquetes. J. Hum. Sport Exerc. Vol. 6, No. 4, pp. 629-638, 2011. The purpose of this research is to show an opinion study about the specifications that the valencian ball trinquetes should have according to the players’ opinion. The valencian ball game is a native sport with a great cultural tradition in the Valencian Community and it has been practised in the trinquetes since the XIV century. Despite its history, these facilities do not have the normative requirements for suitable sport development. Th…
