Optimization of Wind Farm Layout taking Load Constraints into Account
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 Optimization of a wind farm layout is of utmost importance due its economical aspect. The primary aim of optimizing layout is to increase the overall energy production. The higher energy production creates more revenue from wind farm during its operational life time. Wind turbines situated within wind farms are subjected to wake losses due to numbers of factors one of such factor is wind disturbance from the wind turbines installed in front. Therefore, the wind turbines will produce less output as compared to front wind turbines facing winds in free stream. Thus, to have an economically feasible performance, it is necessary …
Active Power Filters in Zero Energy Buildings
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 With an increasing focus on the environment and moving from fossil to renewable energy, there has and is an increasing interest in zero energy buildings. Zero energy buildings often utilize local intermittent renewable energies such as wind and solar energy, and are going to play an important role in the smart grid development with their distributed generation and energy storage etc. In Southern Norway, the smart village Skarpnes is utilizing building integrated photovoltaic systems and is developed for studying zero energy buildings and its impact on electricity demand and power quality. Power electronic based equipment suc…
Utilization of stored hydrogen for power production to overcome intermittency from wind power
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 The energy demand is increasing and due to the enormous amount of pollution that comes from fossil energy it is time to think alternatives. This thesis is about using hydrogen and energy storage to produce power. The system is designed based on an expanding of wind farm at Smøla of 50,13MW, but without doing anything with the grid, which is close to its maximum capacity. The power produced from the year 2015 is used to measure the different component size which is needed. The simulation of the system is used by Simulink with control to handle underproduction and overproduction from the wind farm. The optimal size calculated …

Measurement & Analysis of Labyrinth Leakage in Francis Turbines
2019
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 Thismaster’sthesisis discussing the potential of measured leakage water from Francis turbines in Brokkeand Holenpower plants. There is a leakage that represent a loss, coming from the labyrinth seals in the turbines’runners (crown and band side),and this leakage will increase over time. For this report theleakage from the upper labyrinth side (crown) has been measured. The leakage is different between the four Francis turbines at Brokke and between the three Francis turbines at Holen power station.Portaflow 220Bhas been used, whichis a flow instrument using ultrasonic sound. The measuring instrument was tested and verified bef…
System design for a solar powered thermal storage – to obtain reduction of demand side power peaks
2019
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2019 Demand side management is an efficiency tool to manage the consumption of energy. In this thesis a load controller is developedand used to store self-produced renewable energy as hot water in a domestic hot water heater. There are challenges associated with the grid, which is operating near max capacity. Instead of expandingthe grid and make huge investments to handle grid peak periods, the power consumption can be controlled and utilized better. To utilize all of the self-produced energy, an accontroller is installed and monitoredfrom a computer. A sensor for the temperature, a valve controllerand information about self-prod…
